Villagers demand river breach plugged; get lathies, tear smoke shells | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report Anantnag, June 26: Police on Friday in this south Kashmir district, used tear smoke shells and lathies to disperse villagers protesting against the alleged official apathy towards plugging the river breaches all along Nallah 'Vasihau'. Reports said that hundreds of men from Shamsipora, Tashloo and adjoining villagers gathered to Khanabal Chowk in Anantnag and halted the movement of vehicular traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National highway for hours together. Villagers raised high-pitched slogans against the district administration and also accused them of resorting to favoritism in draining out the flood water from the residential houses in the area. Eyewitness said that after police failed to pacify protesters, police used lathies and tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters from the busy Khanabal chowk, however villagers again assembled at Batengoo, blocked the highway and continued their protest. Prior to Friday prayers police again resorted to Lathi Charge and dispersed the angry villagers which paved way for the movement of traffic on highway. Reports said that similar protest demonstration against district administration held at Wanpoh. MLA Homeshalibug Abdul Majeed Larmi was accompanying the protesters. Angry villagers along with the MLA sat over flyover in the area and blocked highway for hours. Demanding construction of concrete embankments all along the Nallah 'Viasho', protesters told Early Times that administration failed to plug the breaches in the river since September 2014 floods. "Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Bashir Ahmad Khan visited our area and assured that on 3rd of March they will complete the work but till this time nothing has been done. Just a single day rainfall submerged our village as authorities didn't pay any attention towards our pleas since them," protester Bilal Ahmad told Early Times. He said that flash floods in Nallah Vaisho submerged their villages but no one from the administration turned to help. "At the time trouble no one from the administration helped us. We ringed hundreds times on the helpline numbers provided to us by the administration during the night but no one was attending the calls," he said. Protesters said that administration was selectively draining out flood water from the residences of workers of particularly party. "Poor are being singled out. Only those who have allegiance with ruling party are being provided help," they said. Pertinently, today's protest demonstration of Shamsipora villagers was third such protest demo against the government since September-2014 floods. |
