Flood situation in Kashmir is not separatists' cup of tea! | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 26: Even as fresh floods washed away houses, paddy fields and orchards in south Kashmir, not a word of sympathy has been expressed by the separatist leadership, exposing their claims of being "real representatives" of people of Kashmir. While the mainstream parties and others have been up in arms over the alleged non-seriousness of the government towards the crisis, the separatists have been silent. In the past two days Hurriyat Conference-M led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been throwing light on social issues like drug abuse. But a handout issued by the Hurriyat didn't have a word of consolation for the flood-affected people. Hurriyat-G chairman Syed Ali Geelani and Dukhtaran-e-Millat chairperson Syeda Asiya Andrabi on the other hand are busy condemning arrest of a Kashmir University student. Likewise, National Front chairman Nayeem Khan in handout today said the "highest educational institution of Kashmir has been facing at the hands of successive so-called rulers who on the behest of New Delhi never allowed student activism, resulting in suppression among them." Militant commander-turned-politician Javaid Mir has also condemned the arrests. But this is not the case with mainstream politicians. While the ruling PDP is trying to reach out to the affected people, opposition National Conference leaders including Omar Abdullah are busy visiting the affected areas and trying to take the government head on. Same holds true for Congress and CPI (M). CPI (M) leader MY Tarigami didn't mind to take a dig at Education Minister Naeem Akhter Andrabi over his statement that there was no flood threat. Political analysts said separatists were only concerned about their publicity which they fetch from burning issues. "With weather having improved, the separatist know that the news pertaining to receding flood waters won't sell much; so they are going on with the controversial news, which for now, pertains to arrest of a Kashmir University student," said a political observer. Even as weather has improved many areas of south Kashmir continue to be affected. Today Khanabal people staged massive protests over the "government apathy to come to their rescue." As already reported by Early Times many diversions were washed away and hundreds of people were left homeless in Kulgam, Anantnag and Pulwama districts of South Kashmir. In Kulgam district due to heavy rains, the water level in Vaishaw and Kandow streams increased triggering flashfloods. The flash floods washed away several diversions including vital Nehama Noorabad, Aridajan Damhal, Laisoo Damhal, Ashthal, Brazloo, Chamgund and Ari Gatun. Reports said flashfloods damaged crops and orchards at Kakapora, Padgampora, Chursoo, Pampore, Ratnipora and Beighpora in the Pulwama district. A breach was reported from Sempora in Pampore. |
