Reports said that protests broke out in the Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar immediately after the Friday prayers. The protesters were raising slogans against the government and demanded that there should be an end to interference in the religious affairs of Muslims in general and more so during the holy month of Ramadan. As the protesters started pelting stones on the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel the later used force. Police and CRPF personnel lobbed smoke shells on the protesters and there was smoke all around in the Nowhatta area. The protests spread to the nearby Gojwara and Khawaja Bazar areas. Here too people mostly youth came out in protest and pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel. The situation remained tense in these areas and this led to the hampering of traffic as well. Some of the police and CRPF personnel chased protesters who tried to flee while using the road passing adjacent to the Jamia Masjid. The police and CRPF personnel lobbed smoke shells on this group of protesters. Some of the teargas shells landed inside the premises of Jamia Masjid and this led to further protests from the protesters. The protesters referred to this act as an act of 'desecration' and said that this would not be tolerated at all. During the protest demonstrations some of the youth could be seen waving the ISIS flags. These youth were waving the ISIS flags towards the police and CRPF personnel and wanted to catch their attention. This group of people was also chased by police and CRPF personnel with teargas shells being lobbed on them. While the press photographers were returning after completing their job of covering the protest, a group of people intercepted them and objected to their work. When the press photographers said that they were doing their job a youth started beating up Bilal Bahadur, who works as a photographer with Times of India. Bilal suffered minor injuries in the incident and was helped by his colleagues. Following the receipt of inputs that teargas shells have landed inside Jamia Masjid, the Anjuman Auqaf of Jamia Masjid asked the people of Srinagar district to observe strike on Saturday. The strike call was supported by chairmen of parallel factions of Hurriyat Conference. Both Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani have supported the strike call. The strike call has also been supported by Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front and Syed Salim Geelani of National Peoples Party. In their separate statements, Mirwaiz Umar and Geelani have termed the landing of teargas shells as an act of interference in the religious matters of Muslims.
