Action likely against Sharma, Khajuria and Khan | Opposition to Article 370 | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 26: State BJP president and Lok Sabha MP jugal Kishore Sharma, MLC Ashok Khajuria and newly-appointed national secretary Farooq Khan could be in trouble for what they said during the Balidan Diwas on June 23 while remembering Shyama Prasad Mookerjee at Pt Prem Nath Dogra Bhawan, Jammu, and his contribution to the national cause in Jammu & Kashmir. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of Jan Sangh, had entered the state in after violating the pernicious permit system and laid down his life in Srinagar on June 23, 1953. He was a bitter critic of Article 370, as also a bitter critic of the demand in Kashmir for greater autonomy. His view was that if the Kashmiri leadership insisted on Article 370 and greater autonomy, Jammu region and Ladakh must get the status of statehood as the people of these two regions were nationalist to the core and vehemently opposed to the demand in Kashmir for greater autonomy. The BJP observes June 23rd every year as Balidan Diwas. Sources in the BJP reveal that what Sharma, Khajuria and Khan said that day had "not gone down well with those in Delhi who have been looking after the Kashmir affairs". During the programme, Sharma, Khajuria and Khan had commended Mookerjee and his contribution as well as stand on Jammu & Kashmir and Article 370. Speaking on the occasion, Sharma had said: "Mookerjee sacrificed his life while fighting to end the permit system under which any one leaving or entering the J&K State had to obtain a permit". Khajuria too had commended Mookerjee and said: "Mookerjee laid down his life opposing the system of having two sets of laws for J&K and the rest of the country". And as for Khan, he had said: "abrogation of Article 370 would be a real tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee". Actually, Sharma, Khajuria and Khan spoke what was needed to be spoken considering the views of Mookerjee. But the problem was that they spoke something that was not consistent with the agenda of alliance. The agenda of alliance, which was formulated and adopted before the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition government in the state on March 1, not only accommodated the Kashmiri viewpoint on Article 370 but also said that the existing politico-constitutional set up would be maintained at any cost. Maintenance of the existing politico-constitutional set up means the preservation of a regime that makes it compulsory to have two constitutions and two flags. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee had fought against this regime and sacrificed his life while fighting against it. The point is that Sharma, Khajuria and Khan went beyond the confines of the agenda of alliance and in the process annoyed the BJP's coalition partner, which is not only committed to preserving the existing politico-constitutional status but also restoring Article 370 to its original position. Significantly, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav, who was in Srinagar on June 23, had reassured the Kashmiris that the BJP would leave no stone unturned to implement the agenda of alliance "in letter and spirit". In other words, Sharma, Khajuria and Khan took a line that was different from the taken by Ram Madhav. It is obvious that Sharma, Khajuria and Khan violated the agenda of alliance. This violation has, according to insiders, "offended those in New Delhi who want the coalition to complete a full term in office" and that the "high command may take action against Sharma, Khajuria and Khan". |
