Shambled city roads awaits Amarnath pilgrims, administration unmoved | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report JAMMU, June 27: Even as the Amarnath yatra is commencing on July 2, the civil administration is hardly paying any attention to some of the dilapidated and shabby roads within the city which are not only giving terrible moments to the Jammuites but their poor condition could also prove to be an awful experience for lakhs of pilgrims expected to perform the annual pilgrimage. Most of the city roads particularly in old city areas have developed pot holes which are not less than the size of a small trench. The worn out roads include BC Road especially the portion of road connecting Hotel Fortune Inn Riviera crossing to Jogi Gate crossing, a stretch near Ambphalla rotary and the road leading to the Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar via Ware House. The condition of few other city roads is also not up to the mark but these are some of the roads which have not been renovated for a long period of time now despite proving as a big eyesore for the passersby as well as the commuters, who are forced to use such defective thoroughfares as if they are in some rural pocket of the state. Isn't it ironical that the road leading to Jogi Gate Cremation Ground to and fro Hotel Fortune Riviera is long waiting for its repair despite of the fact that the former Deputy Chief Minster Tara Chand of Congress held the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development Ministry for at least four years and the present Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh of the BJP is also holding the charge of the same ministry for the last more than hundred days but the result is zero on ground. This particular road is one such glaring example of the poor state of city roads which loudly tells the sordid saga of Jammu's misfortune despite having two Deputy Chief Ministers from this region at the helm of affairs of the Ministry which is supposed to give a facelift to the city's infrastructure. The road stretch along the Maharaja Hari Singh Park near Jogi Gate has developed so many pot holes that one cannot even able to see the surface beneath. It needs to be mentioned here that no re-carpeting or major repair work has been carried out on this road for the last several years. It may be mentioned here that several tourists and pilgrims use this road stretch as it is an alternative link to the Jammu Railway Station. Moreover, one of the Amarnath Yatra Registration Counter at Jammu Haat, Exhibition Ground is just a stone's throw away from the potholed road stretch; however, the shambled road would be a nightmarish experience for the pilgrims as not only deep holes but a lot of dust is awaiting their arrival. "The condition of most of the internal roads all over the city is pathetic. Bad roads make it difficult to drive on certain stretches particularly when one hits the portion near Jogi Gate which is no less than a hell. Every vehicle driver uses only the main road to avoid the bumpy journeys on such bad roads. Amarnath pilgrims would be wretched after seeing the poor condition of the city roads," a commuter, Puneet Sehgal, told Early Times. |
