Heavy rains, flash floods in other states may hit Amarnath yatra | Registrations decrease as flood threat looms over Kashmir | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 29: The heavy rains and floods that lashed several states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and Uttarakhand may affect forthcoming holy Amarnath yatra. There has been a sudden decrease in registration of pilgrims for holy Amarnath yatra this year as the memories of last year's flood in Kashmir are still afresh in the minds of people. The devastation created by the heavy rains and floods in Uttranchal in general and Kedarnath in particular two years ago resulted in the death of hundreds of people. It seems after affects of those floods have kept the pilgrims visiting the holy cave shrine nestled in Himalayas at bay this year as the number of people registering for the Yatra has declined considerably. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) which looks after the holy shrine and makes the overall arrangements for annual Amarnath yatra had opened 29 registration centers across the country through JK Bank, PNB and Yes Bank but the response of the pilgrims was not encouraging as a very less number of yatris turned up for registration in these counters. The Monsoon rains which played havoc in many parts of the country are certainly going to affect the yatra this year, feel observers associated with the holy pilgrimage for years together. The last year's flood devastation in Kashmir and the flood threat which is looming large this year has led to the decrease in number of pilgrims registering for the holy pilgrimage. Meanwhile Shri Amarnath Yatri Niyas and other social organizations have alleged the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has failed give proper information and wide publicity to this year's yatra resulting into the poor response to registration. The Yatri Niyas senior leader and patron VHP Dr Rama Kant Dubey said the Board and administration were deliberately delaying the arrangements and the tracks from both sides are not clear fully though yatra is a few days away. This year the Shrine Board had fixed a target of over 9 lakh yatris visiting the holy cave but it seems impossible that 9 lakh yatris would visit the holy cave this year. Last year also over four lakh pilgrims have performed darshan in holy cave. They Niyas has also accused the Board of not involving it and other social organizations of the state for yatra arrangements. It said the people associated with Niyas are fully aware of the situation they have the acumen of making the yatra successful against all odds. They can render their voluntary services if Board appeals for the same. But the Board has so far not given any credence to the Niyas or any other religious body, said Dr Rama Kant Dubey, patron of the VHP and senior functionary of the Niyas. He said the condition of Jammu-Srinagar NH is also bad and it can create impediments in smooth running of yatra. The authorities have till date failed to restore NH fully so that the Yatris do not face inconvenience. Meanwhile, the Langers have been installed on yatra tracks on both sides from Baltal and Pahalgam side. Some yatris have already reported at Baltal to leave for holy cave for darshan. The ministers are also visiting the base camps and other halting stations of yatris to look into the arrangements for pilgrims. The poney wallas and traders have installed their sheds. Moreover the authorities have made all arrangements for pilgrims and there would be three tier security system. Besides, CRPF the Jawans of JK Police army has also been deployed for the security of pilgrims in view of the separatists warning to curtail the yatra duration. |
