Dissensions plague not only NC, Congress but PDP too | | | Hitherto an impression had gone round that the state unit of the Congress and the National Conference, which had lost power six months ago, were the only organisations that were experiencing dissensions. An impression had gone round that the state unit of the Congress had been plagued by a row between loyalists and the dissidents. However, this conflict between the loyalists and the dissidents in the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir had assumed new dimensions after G.A. Mir was appointed PCC Chief. Prior to his installation as PCC Chief the Congress was divided between the loyalists, headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz and the dissidents, led by Ghulam Nabi Azad. Now the state unit of the Congress has been burdened with the rise of another group of those leaders who find themselves away from the camps led by Azad and the other headed by Mir. What seems to have made the political scenario in the state interesting is the way dissensions have surfaced in the National Conference. These dissensions were visible when over four senior party leaders, who had held ministerial posts in the past, distanced themselves from the statement issued by the NC spokesman criticising the role of peoples' Conference chairman, Sajjad Lone, who is Minister for Science, Technology and Animal Husbandry. Mir was, in the statement, described as a turncoat. However, the ruling PDP too has suffered not only erosion in its vote bank but has been facing the problem of dissensions. In fact two senior party leaders, both MPs, Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tariq Hameed Karra, have been critical of the working of the coalition Government instead of blaming the BJP for making things hot and difficult for the PDP Baig and Karra have started rising acusing finger against the PDP leadership. Karra had recently blamed the Government for allowing the police to enjoy the upper hand while referring to the police action on protesters in and outside Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. And now it is the turn of Muzaffar Hussain Baig to spring a surprise while expressing doubts about the longevity of the PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. Baig has said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayed is feeling "let down and caged" and the government is unlikely to complete its term unless it makes a course correction. It can complete six years if it adopts some corrective measures. After all, a man is not dead till he is dead. If God forbid, this experiment fails, it will be a cruel joke on the people of Jammu and Kashmir.Baig, also attacked finance minister Haseeb Drabu, without naming him, for his unnecessary, provocative statements and giving false dreams to people of Jammu and Kashmir. Baig has gone to the extent of voicing strong reservations about the agenda of alliance document. He said it was not only "ambiguous and unclear" but also without any signatures. Whether Baig's criticism is fair or simply the outburst of his frustration over the way the Muftis, running the Government, paid no importance to him is not so important as the likely fallout of the statement from Baig, who is considered to be the source of inspiration for the PDP. It does not augur well for the coalition Government because Baig has not spared even the BJP which he terms as the RSS which is communal. This way he is trying to dub Mufti Mohd. Sayeed as a communal politician having aligned with a communal party like the BJP. This can prove damaging for the PDP in the Kashmir valley. It will be in the interest of the survival of the coalition Government if Mufti Syeed initiates measures that could remove grievances from Karra and Baig. It is essential for a coalition Government to have no dissensions at organisational level. Equally it is important for the opposition Congress and the NC to set their house in order if they have to act as a responsible opposition parties. The story about the state unit of the BJP is pitiable.Once the coalition Government is devoid of dissensions it could improve the political atmosphere in the state. |
