Another spell of rain can spell doom
Officials gear up to tackle yet another flood scare

Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 30: Administration is gearing up to tackle yet another flood threat as another spell of rainfall is likely to hit Kashmir in coming days.
Sources told Early Times that Police and other officials have been asked to get ready to face any eventuality and to ensure that they are not caught napping if the situation takes an ugly turn. "Orders have been passed secretly," a police official said.
A source said the officials of the Flood Control department have made it clear to the top brass that rivers across Kashmir have lost retention power and even if it rains for just two to three days there is every possibility of rivers once again creating havoc across Kashmir. "Jehlum has the carriage capacity of 35,000 to 40,000 cusecs and in March this year its flow touched 37000 cusecs and on June 25, 2015 it touched 42000 cusecs," said an official of a Flood Control department.
Sources said the department has not been to carry out the dredging and desliting of river Jehlum and other rivers flowing through Kashmir as constant rainfall in short spells have not allowed the department to take enough preventive measures to stop rivers from overflowing if the weather becomes inclement.
Many websites predicting weather have shown that July month would witness 12 days of continuous rainfall from July 14 onwards. However, Meteorological department claims that predictions of the websites are not always correct and these can change. "We cannot say anything at this point of time but if there is any possibility of flood we will inform the government well in advance," said an official of the MeT department.
It's in place to mention here that people have witnessed flood scare twice this year. First it was in March 2015 and the second scare hit Kashmir on June 25 this year.
Officials are of the opinion that they cannot do much at present other than hope that weather remains fair and the prevailing flood threat is taken care off. "Water levels are raised and dredging work has been suspended in most of the places. We can only hope for the best and pray that weather doesn't play a spoil sport," said a PHE official.
Last week many areas of south Kashmir got inundated and rivers were flowing dangerously. With a just a day left for annual Amarnath Yatra to commence authorities are on their toes as the biggest base camp for Amarnath Yatra Pahalgam falls in south Kashmir and officials believe that it can be by no means considered as a safe place as many rivers, including Lidder, have roared dangerously in the recent past."All the arrangements have been put at place for Amarnath Yatra but if weather becomes inclement and if it starts raining we can't predict the fate of the forthcoming pilgrimage. First and foremost task for all the security agencies is to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims," said an official.
Despite there being no alarm sounded by the MeT department, officials and administration are on toes as everyone knows that flood during the peak tourism season can lead to cancellation of bookings and could play a spoil sport for smooth conduct of the forthcoming Amarnath annual pilgrimage
