SMC comes to Brari Nambal rescue | 6 truckloads of garbage removed from lagoon | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 5: With the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) failing to restore the glory of dying Brari Nambal, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken a lead. Sunday morning the SMC started a special sanitation drive in the lagoon and removed tons of garbage. "We have removed six truckloads of garbage from the lagoon and we will continue with the drive till the last piece of dirt is removed from this water body," Municipal Sanitation Officer, Sufi Muhammad Akbar told reporters. Brari Nambal conservation has emerged as a litmus test for Mufti Government. Situated at the entrance of downtown here, the lagoon has been marred by encroachments and pollution. The problem has been compounded by failure of authorities to undertake its conservation- for past nearly three decades. Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed wants that this water body be restored to its pristine glory and has asked the concerned to take measures on war-footing. Rumor mills are rife that in 2010 the then National Conference led government rejected the offer of foreign companies which offered to restore the lagoon as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). |
