Yatris brave all odds to get mandatory permit | Mismanagement adds to their woes | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA
JAMMU, July 5: No matter how humid the weather is, how scorching the heat is and how tiresome and cumbersome the process of registration for Amarnath pilgrimage is, the unflinching faith of hundreds of yatris can be gauged from the fact that they are facing all the odds and are waiting for hours to obtain mandatory yatra permits and medical certificates to visit the holy cave shrine nestled in Himalayas. The pilgrims had never imagined that getting registration papers would prove to be a Herculean task as the mismanagement at registration centres has made the entire process complicated. The authorities have failed to provide temporary or make shift sun shades at the current registration centre at Jammu Haat, Exhibition Ground due to which the Amarnath pilgrims are bearing the brunt of soaring mercury under open sky as they wait for their turn standing in queue to reach the counter of the window. The yatris, who don't possess the valid yatra permits, face numerous problems which have sort of become a routine affair. Speaking to Early Times, a group of yatris from Gujarat, who despite reaching here day before yesterday couldn't get themselves registered till this afternoon due to the non-availability of the registration forms complained that the number of forms allocated for a given day end within a few hours of the opening of registration counters. "We don't have any complaints regarding our stay and other facilities at Yatri Niwas, Bhagwati Nagar but are extremely disappointed and dissatisfied over the arrangements for the current registration here," said one of the pilgrims. Even pilgrims staying at Yatri Niwas, Bhagwati Nagar are finding it difficult to reach Jammu Haat as getting a direct public transport from the base camp is a difficult task as most of them are new to Jammu and not at all familiar with the system of public transportation. "The establishment of current registration centre quite far from the base camp at Yatri Niwas is questionable… It has compounded the problems of the unregistered yatris….. In the absence of a proper mode of transportation the pilgrims are somehow managing to reach Jammu Haat," another pilgrim told Early Times. |
