Authorities hamper handicapped athlete's rehab | | | Early Times Report Jammu, 5 July: Thirteen-year-old handicapped Khannu, an inmate of Red Cross Home for Handicapped , Udheywala Jammu, has fallen victim to the official apathy and callous attitude of the District Administration that adversely affected her rehabilitation. Khannu was born with only one limb and needed Bionic limbs for her rehabilitation so that she could lead a normal life. Viklang Chhatra Trust and JRC Home, after a long struggle succeeded in motivating Amrit Malhotra, former Chairman , J&K Legislative Council to sanction Rs. 6.00 lakh from his Constituency Development Fund on 26-02-2015 for this purpose. The Deputy Commissioner Jammu in his order No.85-DDCJ of 2015 dated 17-3-2015 referred the case to the District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu for the Bionic arms to Khannu and ordered release of the sanctioned amount. After a lapse of three months the sanction money is yet to be released in the favour of the executing authority in social Welfare Department. VCT and JRC Home, who had been approaching pillar to post, have sought the intervention of Bali Bhagat, the Minister for Social Welfare to use his good office in getting the sanctioned amount released in favour of the executing agency. Bhagat also represents Raipur Domana Constituency in which JRC Home for Handicapped falls. It is pertinent to mention that despite having 90 percent physical disability , Khannu won a Gold Meda in National Games for Handicapped held at Ajmer in Dec 2013. Bionic arm, an engineering feat based on the application of biological method and systems found in nature can enable this athlete to bring laurels to the state in Olympics for handicapped people. |
