Uri residents block cross-LoC trade | Demand registration as traders | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 28: Cross LoC trade remained suspended on Tuesday as residents of Uri blocked the main gate of Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre seeking registration as traders. According to reports, scores of people belonging to different villages of Uri tehsil converged outside Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre to protest in favour of the demand of registering their names as traders in the Cross LoC trade. As the process of registration has been put on hold by authorities, the agitating people blocked the main gate of the trade centre, thereby blocking the way forward of 25 loaded trucks which were supposed to cross Line of Control. Sensing the gravity of situation, SDM Uri and senior police officials reached the spot and tried to make reason with protestors who refused to budge. Meanwhile, Director Industries and Commerce Kashmir talked to protestors on phone and assured them that their names would be included in the list of registered traders, following which the protestors ended their protest. "It was 12:00 noon. The checking of the fully-loaded trucks ensued which continued till 2:00 pm," official said. As per the norms of the trade, the trucks should reach Qaman Post till 1:00 pm so that they would be allowed to cross to the other side of the LoC. "But as the trucks reached late, they were stopped from crossing to the other side. Also no truck from the other crossed to our side. Thus no trade took place," said an official. Meanwhile, General Secretary Salamabad Cross LoC Trade Union Hilal Ahmad Turkey said that the frequent protest by locals at the trade centre has affected their business. "The protestors are creating roadblocks in the trade, because of which we have incur losses worth lakhs as the perishable items get damaged," he said. Custodian of Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre Farooq Ahmad Shah confirmed the news about the protest which led to no cross-LoC trade today. "Director Industries and Commerce intervened and directed us to make list of those people for registration who are actual residents of Uri and are presently living in Uri. We have got 61 applications and are exploring the possibilities of registering their names as trader for cross LoC trade," he said. |
