Omar forgets his 'misdeeds' blames Dad, PDP-BJP pact for militancy in JK | | | Early Times Report srinagar, July 28: Out of power the former Chief Minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah seems to have "lost the way" his latest salvo that "PDP-BJP pact is a reason for youth joining militancy "has drawn flak as most people believe that Omar's six year "dictatorial rule" from 2009 to 2014 pushed the younger generation in Kashmir towards the gun. Omar on Monday had asserted that a possible reason for "new wave of armed insurgency" in Kashmir "could be the formation of PDP-BJP alliance." He went a step ahead and didn't even spare his father Dr Farooq Abdullah saying, "Militancy first erupted in the Valley soon after an accord between, Dr Farooq Abdullah and the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1987." "The present situation is quite similar to 1987 because of the pact between the two parties having different ideologies. This could be one of the possible reasons behind young men joining militant ranks," he said. A critic while talking to Early Times said, "Omar blaming everyone accept himself for youth joining militant ranks is like pot calling kettle black. He has forgotten that when he (Omar) was the Chief Minister he left no stone unturned to crush the youth and push them towards the wall. Someone needs to remind him that it was during his tenure that 120 youth were persecuted and killed in 2010." An analyst said: "When Omar Abdullah took over as the Chief Minister in 2009 militancy was its lowest ebb but his poor performance as the Home Minister and the Chief Minister led to the separatists becoming strong and they encouraging their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) to push in militants into this side. Omar not focusing at his job as the Home Minister of the state led to the radicalization of the youth and they joined militant ranks." A police officer wishing anonymity said, "We had advised the previous government not to take stone pelting and stone pelters lightly but no attention was paid towards our suggestions. The new breed of militants mostly comprises of the youth who were involved in stone pelting and orchestrating street protests." The police official said, "It's really unfortunate that despite security and intelligence agencies informing the previous regime well in advance about local boys joining militant ranks no steps were taken to either prevent them from doing so." The officer claimed, "The new breed of young militants which has surfaced in Kashmir was brainwashed by the separatist elements. Security forces had almost wiped out the militancy from the state in 2009 but at present situation is dicey and tricky." "After being ousted from power Omar Abdullah has started blaming others for revival of militancy in the state. He is doing so to divert the attention of people from the real issue as he himself knows that he as the Chief Minister of the JK played a vital role in pushing the younger generation towards picking up the gun," said a politician. He advised Omar not to "poke his nose" in the sensitive matters and mind his own business till next six years. |
