Kishtwar police recovers body of missing HP trekker after 6 days | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report Kishtwar, Aug 22: After a six day long operation at Roha base camp situated at an altitude of 17000 feet above the sea level, the Kishtwar police recovered the dead body of a 35-year-old missing trekker from Himachal Pradesh. As per the details available with Early Times, Arun Sharma, the trekker, along with his associate Rijole, also from Himachal Pradesh, left for a trekking expedition last week. While Rijole reported back at Zanskar camp, Arun, a resident of Derdhar tehsil in Dehra district of Himachal, was untraceable since August 14. On learning about the trekker's disappearance, a police party from Kishtwar led by Sub Inspector Ali Imran under the supervision of SDPO Atholi, Pardeep Singh Sen, and SP Kishtwar Yougal Manhas launched an operation to trace him. Manhas said that as soon as Kishtwar police received report about the disappearance of Arun, the police launched the search operation and Zanskar administration also pressed a chopper into service. He said that it was only after the efforts of Kishtwar police party, the body of the missing trekker was traced who, according to him, died due to high altitude sickness problem. The trekker's body was recovered from Roha base camp adjacent to Omasila Pass situated at an altitude of 17500 feet, said Manhas. "After travelling by foot for more than four days, the 10-member police party recovered the body of the missing trekker," Manhas told Early Times. "The police, after heroic efforts, shifted the dead body to Machail from where it was brought to Gulabgarh by chopper." Manhas said the state government through Divisional Commissioner Jammu and Chief Secretary J&K was in touch with Himachal government and information regarding the recovery of Arun's body has been conveyed to the Himachal government. He said that Himachal government has deployed its state chopper for lifting the dead body from Gulabgarh, but due to heavy forecast the chopper failed to land at Gulabgarh. As soon as weather improves, the body of the trekker will be shifted to Himachal, said Manhas. Notably, Kishtwar-Gulabgarh-Machail-Omasila-Zanskar was the oldest and historic trekking and mountaineering route till the outbreak of militancy in J&K in 1990. General Zorawar Singh also used the route to conquer Ladakh. The district administration and the state government as well are making efforts to revive this trekking route in the district. |
