Police register FIR as Al Baghdadi's posters appear in Nowhatta | Is ISIS making inroads into Srinagar? | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 22: After taking hoisting of ISIS flags in Srinagar lightly for a year, the police finally woke up to registered a FIR following life-size posters of the terror outfit chief Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi appeared in old Srinagar on Friday. Baghdadi's posters appeared in old City's Nowhatta locality yesterday after the congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid. Witnesses said around a dozen masked youth , assembled atop an under construction facilitation center in the locality, were life-size poster of the top militant, was pasted on the brick wall. Baghdadi's posters were spotted at least at two places in the locality with a tag: `Welcome to Kashmir.' Though nobody has been taken into custody, the "unusual development" has prompted police to register FIR. Police said FIR vide No 60/2015 under section 13 of unlawful activities Act has been registered at Police Station Nowhatta. Though for the past five months ISIS flags were frequently waved in the old city, particularly after Friday prayers, it is for the first time that Baghdadi's posters have appeared. Till now police often insisted that it was a "prank played by some mischief mongers. " The surfacing of Baghdadi’s photographs during protests here has raised concerns for the security agencies across Kashmir. It has emerged as big challenge as over the past few months, police have failed to impress the Union Home Ministry in efforts to check "radicalization." The militant strike in Udhampur furthered embarrassment for the state police when Pakistani militant Naved accused of the deadly attack was taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency. At a time when the Union Government wants the police to be "proactive", Baghdadi's posters have added to the concerns. But police said they were this time sure to crack the case. "Basically, some elements want to provoke us," said a police official investigating the case. The police believe that these anti-national activities happen close to Friday prayers when thousands of devotees throng the central Masjid and it is virtually impossible to keep track on each one of them. "We have noticed that soon after the Friday prayers, some masked youth wave IS, Pakistan and also the flags of militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba while Baghdadi seems to have added to their priority list," they said. Since October last year Army has warned that waving of ISIS flags in Kashmir was a matter of grave concern and the security establishment needed to take note of it at the highest level. The then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah however was of the opinion that waving of the ISI flags was an "act of some idiots." General Officer Commanding the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha, opines that the ISIS has the ability to attract a large number of volunteers and it was a cause of worry. |
