Mission Power" accomplished, BJP forgets martyr status for Chamel Singh | | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: The demand of granting martyr status to Chamel Singh and suitable compensation to his family, was seemingly a poll plank of BJP to attain power. It has now forgotten him because the "mission" has been accomplished. Pertinent to mention here that Chamel was beaten and then murdered in Kot-Lakhpath jail of Lahore in January 2013 under the circumstances in which Punjab's Sarabjit Singh was murdered by the Pak jail authorities. The body was kept for two months in Pakistan. Vital organs were found removed before the body after it was handed over to the family for last rites. While in opposition, BJP legislators and leaders from the state and the Centre had vociferously raised the demand for granting martyr status to Chamel Singh and compensation to his family but the demand has now been kept under the carpet by BJP. BJP legislator Satpal Sharma had on April 29, 2015 organized a press conference in which he had stated that he had submitted a representation to Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed through his Principal Secretary B B Vyas. "The representation states that a martyr status to the deceased and compensation to his family should be given on moral grounds", Satpal stated. Talking to Early Times, elder son of late Chamel Singh, Dara Singh (27) said that only MLA Satpal Sharma had raised his voice in their favour but no other BJP leader bothered about them. "Even local MLA Krishan Chand, who is also from BJP, has not bother to visit us", he said. On being asked if they had received any communication from the state or the central government, Dara Singh replied in the negative and said, "Satpal Sharma had assured that he would meet the chief minister for his meeting with the family members but in the last three months there is no communication for any meeting." He said he was elder among four brothers and family had only 3 acres of land. "It is very difficult to meet both ends, so we brothers are doing menial jobs to keep body and soul together. It is now three years, since my father was killed in Pakistan but there is no mention of the incident in national TV channels. It seems that everyone has forgotten us", he said. He appealed to the chief minister to grant martyr status to his father and compensation at par with Sarabjit Singh's family of Punjab. "Punjab government gave Rs 1 cr and job to family members but we didn't get anything so far, which is very unfortunate", he said. It is also very astounding to notice that few months back, while addressing a press conference, MLA Sat Sharma (CA) had said, "It was a matter of appreciation when Punjab Government compensated the family of Sarabjit Singh with Rupees One Crore and jobs to both his daughters whereas, nothing was done by previous State government of Jammu and Kashmir in this regard concerning the case of Chamel Singh". The BJP MLA had also mentioned that a communication was also made to previous NC-Congress government but there was no response from their side concerning the same. "Now BJP itself is in power but there is no word from it so far, which only signals towards a fact that the demand of granting martyr status was merely a tactics to get support in elections", a leader of Congress party said. Despite repeated phone calls, MLA Satpal Sharma didn't pick up his phone.
