Will Pakistan listen to Farooq's plea for promoting cordial ties with India?
9/10/2015 10:01:15 PM
After several months National Confer
ence President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, and
his son, Omar Abdullah, were on the same page while pleading for cordial ties between India and Pakistan in the interest of peace in the entire South Asian region. The only surprise that Omar Abdullah had for the party workers and leaders was his way of blaming Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, for having sabotaged the NSA level talks between India and Pakistan. In support of his contention he has cited the instance of arrest of some Hurriyat leaders on the eve of their departure for New Delhi to meet Pakistan National Security Adviser, Sartaj Aziz. Well Omar should know it better than other politicians that those couple of Hurriyat leaders, who were arrested, were released within hours. And he should know it better than others that most of the top Hurriyat leaders did not go to New Delhi and instead sent their party associates to interact with Sartaj Aziz. Even if Mufti Sayeed had allowed all the Hurriyat leaders to visit New Delhi they would have been arrested on the airport in Delhi as was done in case of Shabir Shah. Omar should know it better than his colleagues in the National Conference that if Pakistan called off the proposed NSA level talks it did so on three factors. First Islamabad did not want the NSA level talks to remain confined to discussion on terror. Secondly, Islamabad insisted on having a meeting between Kashmiri separatists n Sartaj Aziz on the eve of the formal talks which was not acceptable to India. Thirdly Islamabad wanted New Delhi to have a comprehensive dialogue involving all bilateral issues, particularly the Kashmir issue.
Well whatever reasons Omar had for trying to accuse Mufti Sayeed for sabotaging the NSA level talks his father seems to have shown more grace by suggesting to India and Pakistan to promote friendly ties which could ensure peace in the region. He has asked India and Pakistan to eschew the "line of war" and resolve all issues through dialogue as he insisted that neither country would progress without any friendship between the two. "There is an atmosphere of war around. Threats are coming from there (Pakistan) that they are ready. Who will die? A poor Kashmiri here and a poor Kashmiri there. And what will happen? Nothing will change. The line (Line of Control) will not change, but we will die," Farooq said. It is in this context he has request both the countries to stop this line of war and try to resolve the issues through dialogue. Invoking the views of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Farooq urged both India and Pakistan to tread the road of progress through friendship. He rightly stated that the two countries can move forward only through talks and not through bombs.
Hope Pakistan listens to Farooq's sound arguments and his pleas which could change the political and security environment in the region because he knows it well that these threats can hardly alter the ground realities. While pleading for promoting friendship between the two sides Farooq Abdullah was reminded of Atal Behari Vajpayee's utterances he had made, years ago, in Karnah in north Kashmir, where he(Vajpayee) had said that friends can be changed but neighbours cannot be changed. Again Farooq Abdullah's statement needs to be read between the lines by those who matter in Pakistan because Farooq has urged both India and Pakistan to shun the talk of war and try the language of friendship and peace. As is his nature Dr Farooq Abdullah has cherished having a dig on the Hurriyat leaders by describing them as Pakistan's friends. He has urged these friends of Pakistan to convey to Islamabad that it will be in the interest of Pakistan to promote cordial ties with India. Well during the last 68 years Pakistan has played all the games which it knew for needling, harming and bleeding India. It has not succeeded fully in its mission and what is amazing is the way that as an exporter of terror to India Pakistan has started getting tormented by the activities of terrorists. Pakistan's hatred against India has not yielded any results and it is time for Pakistan to play friendly matches with India.
