Omar can't fool people of Jammu, Ladakh | Division of State imminent | | ET Report JAMMU, Sept 10: Working president of the defeated National Conference, Omar Abdullah, who, like other Kashmiri separatists and votaries of self-rule, has been championing the cause of Pakistan and indulging in politics of competitive sectarianism to restore the space his outfit lost over the years to the PDP in Kashmir and BJP in Jammu, has finally realized that the prevailing situation in the State has the potential of forcing people to demand division of the State. It appears, the possibility of the deprived regions of the State witnessing serious demands for the division of the State has frightened him and others of his ilk for obvious reasons. The division of the State would reduce manifold the political importance of Kashmir, which is the smallest but the most prosperous region in the State and which has become the hub of anti-national activities. His September 9 Leh statement on the political future of Jammu & Kashmir State doesn't suggest any other thing. It clearly indicates his nervousness. It is a different story that Omar Abdullah didn't hint at the causes which could provoke political explosions in the deprived regions of the State or which have already started witnessing demands for the division of the State on regional lines, despite the fact that he knew where the shoe was pinching. The very fact that Omar Abdullah admitted that certain elements could give a fillip to the demand seeking division of the State only established that he had felt the people's pulse. What did Omar Abdullah say at Leh? He, inter-alia, said that there could be attempts to divide the State and its people on the basis of religion and region and said his party National Conference will not allow it to happen. "It might be in the electoral interests of other political parties to divide the State and its people on the basis of religion and region, National Conference treats the cause of amity and brotherhood in the State above and beyond the petty trappings of power and electoral machinations," he said while addressing party workers. He is on a three-day tour of Leh and Nobra areas of Ladakh region to oversee the party's preparations for the upcoming Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections. His unambiguous statement clearly suggested that he knew the direction in which things have been moving in the State and his suggestion was well-founded in the sense that there are determined sections in Ladakh and Jammu who have been demanding the division of the State, saying they could not do any business with Kashmir and backward-looking and perverted Kashmiri leadership. The people of Jammu region want the status of statehood and the people of Ladakh want Union Territory status. It is pertinent to mention here that Panthers Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and many in the BJP and the Congress all want the State's division, saying they hate and despise the politics, Kashmir-style. Besides, there are organizations like the Panun Kashmir which have been demanding a separate homeland in the Valley for the Kashmiri Hindu refugees residing in Jammu and other parts of the country since early 1990. The PK leadership has been struggling to achieve its object since 1991 and it has repeatedly said that they would return to Kashmir only if a separate homeland for the Kashmiri Hindus was established within the Valley, which should also be invested with the status of Union territory so that the Indian Constitution could flow freely in their homeland. Omar Abdullah and others of his ilk must not forget that they have created a situation that has left the deprived regions and deprived sections of society in the state to seek division of the State. The situation as it prevails today in the state suggests that things could hot up anytime. The fact is that the division of the State is imminent. Even otherwise, there is no reason why this State should remain one political unit. The State, it is rightly said, "consists of three disparate regions", that "there is nothing that is common between the three regions of the State" and that "Jammu and Ladakh have not given the power of attorney to Kashmiri leadership". Omar Abdullah or no Omar Abdullah, the State will get divided sooner than later as the nature of politics being played in the State is such. |
