Ruling, opposition parties welcome ban on sale of beef | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 10: Opposition and ruling parties in Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the High Court decision on the ban on sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir. The ruling BJP party's MLC Ashok Khajuria said that since the party had always opposed to the killing of bovine animals like cows in the state and have been vigorously pursuing its ban on many quarters. "It is a welcome decision from the court that has ordered stringent directions against the killing of cows and buffaloes in the state as these animals are revered as gods in Hindu religion. The ban on sale of beef is a worthy decision that would give a strong message against those forces which had been polluting the religious belief of particular community," said Ashok Khajuria. He added "Bharat Ki Nirmata Gou Mata" (Cow is building force of India). The ban on the sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir is only the reiteration of an over 150-year-old law. Under section 298A of the Ranbir Penal Code, intentionally killing or slaughtering a cow is a cognizable, non-bailable offence punishable with 10 years imprisonment and fine. The RPC was enacted in 1862 by the then Dogra maharaja of the state. Congress MLC Ravinder Sharma termed it as a sensitive issue. "Government should take call on this situation as it is a sensitive issue. It is a High Court decision to be respected above all, but since the coalition government of BJP-PDP are busy in raising uncalled for controversies, both have different approaches on various issues that has kept both the regions wedged," said MLC Ravinder Sharma. He said BJP and PDP are two opportunist forces partnering each other to grab power only and hence are fiddling with many religious matters that include recent VAT tax on air fare on Vaishno Devi and Shiv Khori for which they are blaming each other. He warned of communal wedge deepening in the state through both parties own agendas. Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party has also welcomed the ban on sale of beef. Talking to Early Times, JKNPP president Balwant Singh Mankotia said that ban should have been imposed much earlier as party has been fighting for the cause on streets and roads for a long time. "This is a welcome decision by the High Court and we respect its verdict on banning the killing of bovine animals in the state," said Balwant Singh Mankotia . The Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal Wednesday banned sale of beef in Jammu and Kashmir. The direction was passed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Parimoksh Seth seeking slaughtering or killing of bovine animals an offence punishable under Section 298-A and possession of such slaughtered animal an act punishable under Section 298-B of the RPC. |
