Gandhi-Mandela cricket series-2015 declared open

Jammu, Sept 10:Director, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) for India and Bhutan, Kiran Mehra and Principal Secretary Income Tax Department Sangeeta Gupta today declared open Gandhi-Mandela Cricket series-2015 (UN-GGF Peace Trophy) organized for Home inmates under-16 category at Jammu University.
Vice Chancellor Jammu University, Prof. R.D. Sharma, IGP Jammu, Danish Rana were guests of honour on the occasion.
Vice President Gandhi Global Family Padamshree, S.P. Verma, Major Gen. (Retd), G.S. Jamwal, prominent citizens, students and sports lovers in large number were present on the occasion
The programme was presided over by Director UNIC.
The tournament is being organized in Jammu and Kashmir by United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan and Gandhi Global Family from 10th September to 13th October, 2015.
Congratulating the organizers and the participating teams, Director UNIC Kiran Mehra said that UNIC and GGF are working tirelessly for peace and development of the state as well as nation by means of organizing sports events.
Mehra said that volunteerism is the main aspect of Gandhi Global Family which largely provides supports to underprivileged and needy. She said that UNIC has launched Young@70 Campaign to bring maximum number of youth under single umbrella to work for peace and fight against discrimination.
Earlier, Vice President GGF, Padamshree S.P. Verma said that main objective of organizing this tournament was to encourage home inmates and to provide them vibrant platform to expose their hidden talent to excel in sports. He said that GGF has taken concerted initiatives with special focus on home inmates to encourage and support them in any hour of need. He expressed gratitude towards the UNIC for India and Bhutan for their active support to Gandhi Global Family.
VC Jammu University and IGP Jammu also spoke on the occasion and appreciated UNIC and GGF for their collective efforts to disseminate the message of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. They also urged students to follow the footprints of these great legends. The inaugural match was played between Baal Gram Channi Rama and Baal Niketan Ambphalla. Around 40 matches will be played in different districts of the state followed by final match on 13th October, 2015 at Srinagar. On the occasion cultural programmes were also presented by students.
