Overloading goes unabated, Local allege nexus between transporters-traffic police | | | Arun Trisal Early Times Report
Kathua Sept 10: Over loading is still a routine not on the rural and hilly routes of the district but within the urban i.e. main district headquarters, the Kathua, courtesy, alleged unholy nexus of traffic police and the transporters as the traffic police prefers only to challan the two wheeler riders while ignoring overloading in buses, mini buses and tempos which go unabated Buses, minibuses and small passenger magic vehicles are often seen over loaded on various city routes and nothing has changed on ground except statements by the officials whose hollow claims have fallen flat on ground zero. "It is a known fact now that the Traffic Police is in hand in glove with the transporters who are plying buses and minibuses who indulge in overloading of the passenger vehicles", alleged a college going student and an activist. Another local lamented that mini bus operators, particularly in rural areas, had also resorted to various tactics to create more space than the seating capacity in their vehicles by extending its streamline more from the manufacturing basics to generate "extra income" but making passengers vulnerable to risk of their lives.""Overloading in passenger vehicles on roads is a running battle going on unabated with the traffic police failing to keep check over violation of traffic rules, locals alleged. Locals also alleged that on almost all the passenger routes of Kathua District, passenger vehicles are extremely overloaded thereby increasing the chances of accidents. "Overloading has become a routine menace in rural areas," said Pawan Dev Singh student of GDC Kathua , "leave aside mini buses and buses, overloading in newly introduced 'loading tempos', being used to ferry passengers from one place to another in rural and semi-urban areas, is quite visible which is not only dangerous but authorities are in deep slumber." Humming similar tones, Naveen Sharma , a resident of Barwal remarked that due to non-availability of government-controlled public transport, the private bus and mini bus operators always try to make good profit by resorting to overloading. "Unfortunately, the policemen virtually failed to take action against the violators as the latter had developed a nexus with them for allowing them to ferrying more passengers than the seating capacity of their vehicles, the locals alleged. |
