KEA demands for constitution of committee in order to extend life span of commercial vehicles | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 10: Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) has impressed upon state government to constitute a committee so that the life span of the commercial vehicles is extended beyond the period of 25 years. KEA Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Khan said that government should refrain from issuing any order that would prove to be detrimental to the interests of transport sector in Kashmir valley. He said the government should implement the orders of High Court to constitute a committee for recommending enhancement of the life span of commercial vehicles beyond 25 years. "The order was issued following a petition by the valley transporters to reconsider the judgment in view of the much less mileage covered by the valley base commercial vehicles," said Khan. He said the government had also been directed to relocate Batmaloo and Jammu bus stands suitably and ensure de-congestion of vehicular traffic. The KEA Chairman alleged that the orders of Court were not carried out in totality and only the KMDA bus stand which operates services to South Kashmir was removed and located at Pantha Chowk. He termed the decision as a miserable one adding the stand at Pantha Chowk lacks passenger facility and comfort and parking bays. "The Chowk is congested and causes traffic jams of immense nature. Jammu bus stand remains unmoved and Batmaloo bus stand is presently catering to North Kashmir from the same location. Commuting to Pantha Chowk is both expensive and time consuming for South Kashmir commuters and they prefer commuting by Tata Sumos," said Khan. The KEA Chairman said that Tata Sumos are now plying from all parts of Srinagar city and it takes at least four to five Sumos to carry a bus load of passengers, thereby causing huge traffic congestion within the city. He said Tata Sumos contrary to the permissible norms carry passengers on individual basis and random pick up and drop stoppages. "The state government is contemplating relocation of Batmaloo bus stand as well. This will cause more traffic congestion and chaos. The people at helm should acquire suitable and large piece of land, conveniently located for daily commuters and set up a modern bus terminal with adequate parking bays. KEA would be willing to assist the authorities to select the terminal location for the benefit of transporters, commuters and general public. The aim should be suitability of location, passenger convenience and resultant de congestion of city traffic," said Khan. The KEA Chairman said that Alliance is of firm belief that all the directives of state government so far have resulted in shattering the already ailin g transport sector and bringing its commercial activities to virtual standstill. He said for its revival all urgent steps are required and immediate rescue would entail getting the Southern bus stand back to Batmaloo till a suitable alternate General Bus stand is created with all the requisite facilities envisaged under Motor Vehicles Act (MVA). |
