Vaishno Devi tax will polarize JK | KEA seeks Modi, Mufti's intervention | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 10: A day after this newspaper reported that imposition of tax on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage contradicts the national policy, whereby the Central and the State Governments offer subsidies on pilgrimages irrespective of religion, across the country, Kashmir Inc supported the viewpoint asking the government to go for immediate revocation of the orders or else the decision would polarize the Jammu and Kashmir on communal lines. In a significant development the Kashmir Inc has sought personal intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Bhai Modi and Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed into the matter. The Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation President Mohammed Yasin Khan in an official handout today said the government has subjected the state of Jammu and Kashmir to "tax terror." Khan who also heads the Kashmir Economic Alliance said "on one hand the Sales Tax department has started harassment of flood-hit Kashmir traders through undue crackdown of shopkeepers while on the other service tax is being levied on religious matters like Mata Vaishnu Devi pilgrimage." "In one region, the communal sentiments of the people are being hurt whereas in the other the flood victims are being subjected to undue taxation. This all will have far reaching consequences and the state is all set to get polarized on regional and communal lines," Khan said.He said the orders being executed by the Finance Department seem to be part of the game plan conceived by the RSS is Nagpur. "This game plan aims at victimizing the people of Kashmir and at the same time divided the state on communal lines," Khan said. He said at a time when governments offer subsidies for pilgrimage of various religions, to uphold communal harmony, the Vaishnu Devi tax can jeopardize the safety of a community living in Jammu region. He said taxation seems to be a deep rooted conspiracy. "This is evident through the government orders which started with the imposition of 4 % additional tax on diesel and petrol. This four percent tax has in fact silently lead to manifold inflation in the state when the flood hit people are yet to get any rehabilitation package from the government," Khan said. Questioning the legitimacy of these orders issued by Finance ministry headed by Hasib Drabu, Khan said how come this all was being allowed by the state Cabinet without its consent. "If Chief Minister is sincere towards the state, how come does he allow one department or minister to take entire state for a ride… Or, is it that this government is on the whole being run by RSS ideologues," the KTMF president questioned. Terming the "tax terror" a deep rooted conspiracy against the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Khan appealed Prime Minister Narendra Bhai Modi and the Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to personally look into the matter. "New Delhi and the JK governments need to show seriousness to end this tax terror otherwise it is going to be taken as deep- rooted conspiracy which may not only polarize the state but may risk the life of particular community in Jammu. |
