SRINAGAR, Sep 10: As if the September 2014 devastating flood was not enough to dent the psyche of the people of Saffron rich town of Pampore, the Forest department's decision of shifting the sale depot from its original place has added to the mental agony of hapless people.
A group of locals while sharing views with Early Times said that the Department of Forests shifted the sale depot from its original place without taking the population into confidence. The locals said that it would be difficult for them to reach the re-designated sale depot since it is many KM kilometers away from the original position.
"The sale depot was located in Tanchibagh area and since it was centrally located people from the adjacent areas used to get the timber conveniently. However, the depot has been shifted two Km away at Namblabal near the grid station in the vicinity of Muslim Educational Institute. Irony is that even the officials of the department were unaware about the shifting of the sale depot," said the locals.
The locals said the shifting of sale depot has created problems for them since it is getting difficult to get the timber from such a distance. The locals said the original sale depot would cater to many localities and due to its centrality masses in general faced few problems in getting timber.
"The last year's flood led to large scale devastation and many of the affected people are yet to get timber in order to rebuild their houses. The latest move by the concerned department has added to the miseries of the people. Since majority of the people don't know about relocation of sale depot it is quite possible that they might not get their share of timber sanctioned in their favour," said the locals.
The locals said that if the sale depot had to be shifted than what was the fun of dumping one truck load of the timber at the original sale depot. The locals said that three truckloads of timber have been dumped at the relocated sale depot adding that the logs of wood may get rotten with the passage of time.
"If the sale depot suffered damages due to the last year's flood then it should have been shifted immediately after the flood, but that did not happen. What forced the concerned department to shift the sale depot is a million dollar question and the answer lies with the concerned officials. The department in fact did not take into confidence their own people who are posted at the sale depot," said the locals.
When contacted Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Lidder Forest Division, Mohammad Ashraf said that sale depot has been shifted for the time being since it suffered damages due to the last year's flood. The DFO said that there is no reason other than this for the shifting of the sale depot.
"I have passed on standing instructions to the officials to complete the restoration work as soon as possible. Damages have been caused to the chain link fencing and the channels at the depot. I believe the restoration work would be completed soon and we would shift back to the original place within a week or so," said Ashraf.
