Work on 4-laning of Ramban-Banihal stretch yet to start | | | Early Times Report
BANIHAL, Oct 1: The accident-prone area of Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Ramban-Banihal stretch, is still waiting for its expansion under the four-lane project of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). Despite many announcements about releasing money for the project by the government and the NHAI, the work on this 40-Km stretch is yet to take off. Sources told Early Times that low rates of tenders for construction of this stretch is the main reason for the inordinate delay. They said the tendering process had to be cancelled at least thrice due to disinterest shown by the construction companies. Also, the construction company would be responsible for the construction as well as smooth plying of traffic during the work which is very difficult for any company. But now, fresh tenders have been invited, and a major construction company HCC is believed to have bagged the tender. The bad condition of the 300-km highway, specially the Ramban-Banihal stretch, is giving major trouble to drivers and the passengers as well. Moreover, frequent traffic jam during the migration of nomads from the winter zones to the summer zones of the state adds to the woes of the commuters. During the winters this part of highway is always a headache for the passengers and the traffic police as landslides hit at different spots. The rush and huge surge in traffic often leads to accidents on this accident-prone stretch. In the past many years, scores of people have either lost their lives or have been rendered handicapped for life in different accidents on the highway. Many drivers who are plying on this highway told Early Times that the need of the hour is to immediately start work on four-laning of the highway. |
