Delhi asks Pak to vacate POJK | India's changing foreign policy towards Pakistan | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 1: There appears a somewhat welcome change in the India's foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan. During the past few days, New Delhi made some right noises to tell Pakistan that while it was prepared to talk to Pakistan to resolve all bilateral issues between the two nations, it would want Islamabad to realize that if it sincerely believed in a serious dialogue with India, it had to stop exporting terrorism to India and also vacate Pakistan-occupied-Jammu & Kashmir (POJK), which was under its illegal occupation since 1947-1948. However, it was today that New Delhi took a clear line on Pakistan, Kashmir and terrorism. Candidly terming Pakistan a "prime sponsor of terrorism," India strongly hit back at Islamabad and said "de-militarizing" Jammu & Kashmir was not the answer for achieving peace but "de-terrorizing" Pakistan is as it uses terror as a "legitimate instrument" of its statecraft. India also asked Islamabad for "early vacation" of POJK. "In truth, it (Pakistan) is actually a victim of its own policies of breeding and sponsoring terrorists. The world watches with concern as its consequences have spread beyond its immediate neighbourhood," First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India to the UN Abhishek Singh said in a sharp retort exercising India's Right of Reply during the General Debate of 70th session of UNGA. Besides, Abhishek Singh, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup also reacted to the Pakistan Prime Minister's comments on Kashmir and terrorism. He in his response through a series of tweets said: "To de-militarize Kashmir is not the answer, to de-terrorize Pakistan is. Pakistan is not primary victim of terrorism but of its own policies. It is in fact the prime sponsor of terrorism". Swarup further tweeted that Pakistan's "instability arises from its breeding of terrorists. Blaming neighbours is not a solution". It is clear that the Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is dictating India's foreign policy. The statement must have rattled and baffled the PDP leadership, as also other Kashmir-based parties and separatists. These statements came in the wake of the reports that people of POJK have revolted against Pakistan, demanded independence from it and said India was a better place to live. It was perhaps for the first time that New Delhi took such an unequivocal stand on Pakistan, Jammu & Kashmir and the scourge of terrorism that had caused immense damage to India both in terms of men and money. The statement that Pakistan uses terror as a "legitimate instrument" was a befitting response to the belligerent Pakistan and vindication of those in India who never endorsed the view of the South and North Blocks that Pakistan, like India, was also a victim of terrorism. This was the line of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and this was also the line of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. These statements were also an unequivocal response that came immediately after powerless Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif raised Kashmir issue in his address to the UN General Assembly (UNGA). He termed Kashmir's non-resolution as a failure of the world body and proposed a 4-point "peace initiative" with India which included vacation of Siachen glacial region, stop to ceasefire violations from the Indian side and demilitarization of Jammu & Kashmir. He also told the UNGA that Pakistan also was the "primary victim" of terrorism - a suggestion no responsible nation would ever appreciate. It is pertinent to mention here that Sharif equated Kashmir with Palestine and said both the "Palestinians and Kashmiris (read Kashmiri Muslims) are oppressed by foreign occupation". He made a wrong comparison while talking about "suffering of Muslims across the world", saying "Palestinians and Kashmiris (are) oppressed by foreign occupation". |
