BJP Kashmir unit in tight spot, mulls polls at local level | High Command seeks report card, threatens to choke funds | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 1: Under pressure from high command to come up with their report card, the Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to hold the elections at halqa and district level across the Valley. Sources told Early Times the BJP high command has taken a strong note about BJP leaders bragging about them having done a lot of work at the ground level to rope in the people into the party fold. "For the past four months you have been claiming that thousands of people have joined BJP in Kashmir and at present BJP has more than three lakh members, if it's true prove it," a top BJP leader is understood to have told the party leaders of BJP Kashmir unit. Sources said high command has reportedly told the BJP leaders that their funds would be choked if they are unable to carry forward the party's mission and message of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "BJP leaders in Kashmir have decided to hold the elections at local level to elect the party leaders to show it to the party high command that they have been working hard on the ground and members would elect their representatives," said a source. He said that BJP leaders in Kashmir have withdrawn huge amount from the party fund on the account of party's Mahasampark programme. "The high command wants the leaders to list their achievements to know whether the money was spent properly or not," the source added. The BJP Kashmir unit has been in news for the wrong reasons in the recent past as many Kashmir based leaders tried their best to get the berths as MLCs or heads of various boards and corporations but they (Kashmiri leaders) were told that they first have to work on field and then demand privileges. Sources said that Party high command has made it clear to the BJP leaders in Kashmir that they should not provide the party leadership with the wrong feedback. "We have to ensure that BJP opens its account in Kashmir if the ULB polls are held. Prior to Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014 you people had assured the party leadership that BJP would win at least five to ten seats in Kashmir but the fact is that we had to remain content with a zero," sources quoted a top BJP leader as having told the leaders of Kashmir unit. "The forthcoming ULB polls are crucial for the party in Kashmir. If party is unable to win any seats it would prove that BJP leaders in Kashmir have been doing lip service during all these months and have failed on the ground," the source added. Insiders revealed that BJP leaders in Kashmir have decided to hold polls within the party at local level to test the waters and show it to the party high command that they are on the job. "These polls are mere eyewash and nothing more, by doing so the BJP leaders in Kashmir want to avert the pressure and buy some more time," the source added. |
