REVISITING GANDHI: Little cheers, more disappointment ! | | | Early Times Questionairre Jammu, Oct 1: As the entire nation is observing the birth anniversary of Father of Nation on Oct 2, the relevance of his belief among the masses here in Jammu has some very interesting anecdotes attached to it. Five different segments of people interviewed through five questions posed to them regarding Mahatma Gandhi's credits brought the answers that left less cheers and much disappointment. The questionnaire was: Who is father of nation? Where he was born? What was his full name? What was his wife's name? What historical event is attached to his philosophy? Manik Sharma, a class 4th student from a reputed school was able to give the answer of first three questions. He was not aware about the name of Mahatma's wife and historical event attached to his life. Much to the Gandhiji's follower, Sangeeta Devi, a class 10th student of a government school could not deliver the answer of a single question, reflecting the quality of the education in government run institutions. When her teachers were asked for poor performance, they refused to comment. Luckily, a Jammu University graduate student, Pushpa Dubey gave all the answers successfully and said, "I had been a follower of Gandhiji since my childhood. His philosophy and teachings are more relevant these days. It is not only the duty of the teachers but also the parents to inculcate the values of Mahatma's philosophy among the children." Ranjan Dev , a father of two children, failed to give the full name of Mahatma and he had little knowledge about contributions made by the Gandhi for the country. He gave the reply of first question while remained mum on all other questions. Uttam Chand (71), a resident of Krishan Nagar Colony recalled his childhood and said, "The whole country was behind the Gandhiji. I had come in contact with the followers of Gandhiji during childhood. I was inspired by the philosophy and non-violence mantra of the Mahatma." He however, gave satisfactory reply to all the questions. However the most disappointing verdict came from all of them about the ignorance for the Prime Minister of India, Lal Bhadur Shastri whose birthday also falls on Oct 2. All of them including the veteran Uttam Chand could not recall the greatness of the "little man" whose political acumen has raised India to great standards. |
