Now, Lal Singh terms Mufti-led police deptt corrupt | | Miniya Chatterji | 10/7/2015 11:45:31 PM |
| Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 7: Health Minister Lal Singh has undermined Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's authority for the second time. Taking part in a discussion in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday over growing drug abuse in the J&K, Singh trained guns at the police, terming it "the main culprit behind the spread of the drug menace." "Nobody will talk about how the police is actually responsible for the drug menace. If there is a weak SHO, things are bound to regress. Drugs are not spread by unemployment. What has unemployment to do with a teenager student who consumes drugs?" Singh said, while responding to suggestions of members on how to curb the menace. Saying that the police needs to focus on arresting 'the source' providing drugs, not addicts, Singh posited the issue of corruption within the force. He said some SHOs have fixed rates for ensuring that the drug supply reaches its suppliers who later sell it to the youth. Notably, the Home portfolio has been retained by Mufti with himself and speaking against the police department by a minister that too on the floor of the House was no less than a shock for all legislators. This is not for the first time when in Singh has confronted the Chief Minister. On July 4, Mufti's decision of relocating gynecological ward from the GB Pant Children Hospital here was challenged by Singh, who said the facility would continue at the hospital. "The gynecological ward and its theater will not be relocated. The government will continue to run it from the hospital as has been the practice," Singh had reportedly said that time. Meanwhile, sources said senior Home officials have expressed their resentment about Singh's speech in Assembly, terming it tantamount to underscoring the vitality of the police. "It is the police force which has rendered immense sacrifices for the restoration of peace in J&K. How could a politician, only in bid to score political points, target police. This must not be tolerated," said a senior official of the Home Department. Sources confirmed late on Wednesday evening that Mufti would soon take a call over Singh's speech and that a vital announcement in this regard would be made. |
