Jammu's civil society for a regional party | Opposition also K-centric | | ET Report jammu, Oct 7: The developments which unfolded in Kashmir during the past four days once again made it manifestly clear that there was none even in the opposition parties who would ever adopt a holistic and all-inclusive approach towards the issues facing not just Kashmir but also other regions - Jammu and Ladakh. It was Kashmir, Kashmir and only Kashmir that dominated everything with the people of Jammu and Ladakh finding themselves in a State of helplessness, despondency and frustration. The people of Jammu region had pinned faith in a party and brought it into power, but the so-called Jammu region-centric party abandoned them even before taking oath of office. Everyone, including members of the ruling coalition and from the opposition parties either spoke against each other to score political points or supported all the issues which were fundamentally Kashmir-centric or which the majority community held very dear. Of course, all of them were one as far as their stand on Article 370 and Article 35-A or the State's separate status was concerned. If the opposition parties expressed the fear that the RSS was trying to erode the State's special status by questioning Article 370 and Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution, the ruling coalition reassured them that it would see to it that the State's special status was maintained and defended at any cost. The people of Jammu region and Ladakh consider Article 370 and Article 35-A responsible for their neglect and marginalization. Article 370 defines the Centre-State relations and Article 35-A empowers the State Government to grant or not to grant citizenship rights to a particular group of people, as, for example, refugees from Pakistan, all non-Muslims. The people of Jammu region believe, and rightly so, that if they are to obtain their due representation in all the spheres, these Articles have to be removed from the Indian statute book. Not a single member either from the ruling coalition or from the opposition parties spoke a word for the people of Jammu region and the problems confronting them during the past four days. On the contrary, the Jammu-based members belonging to the National Conference took cudgels with the ruling coalition and charged it with diluting the State's special status - a baseless charge. The ruling coalition has not deviated a bit from the agenda of alliance that maintains the State's special status and empowers the ruling coalition to go beyond it to conciliate Pakistan and Hurriyat leadership. Indeed, the developments which took place during the past four days have vindicated those who all through asserted that the national parties were not a solution to the age-old Jammu problem, that the people of Jammu region needed a party that was wholly and solely committed to the Jammu cause and that the Kashmir-based parties and their agents in Jammu region will always remain Valley-centric. The Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) has been trying to play the required role but it has to work very hard to make it acceptable across the region. As of now its support-base is confined to four-five constituencies. It has to expand its support-base. It has been trying hard to that, but it would take time. Meanwhile, many prominent civil society members in the Jammu region have been also discussing ways and means which could end the Jammu's woes and their view is the same: People of Jammu region need their own party that is committed to them as well as New Delhi. |
