Setting up of Tourism Advisory Board unnerves G A Mir | May face probe for committing irregularities during his tenure | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir has put himself in trouble by opposing the recently constituted Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) as ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a strong exception to it and has hinted at exposing his "misdeeds." Sources told Early Times that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who also holds the tourism portfolio is working hard to revive the tourism sector in the state and is putting all the efforts to ensure that tourists return to Jammu and Kashmir. "The previous NC-Congress regime didn't pay much heed towards promoting tourism in the state. Former Tourism minister Ghulam Ahmed Mir spent huge amounts on his foreign trips and didn't pay much attention towards attracting domestic tourists who thronged Kashmir in large numbers in 2011, 12 and 13 and even before deadly deluge in 2014 September," said a source. "Previous regime went ahead with sponsoring the IIFA awards event in the US at a whooping cost of Rs 4 crore despite its negative travel advisory on Jammu and Kashmir. Had this amount been spent judiciously in India itself, it would have brought several lakh of tourists to Kashmir," the source added. He said that Mir during his tenure not only created liabilities worth crores of rupees in the tourism sector by allotting works to his favourites without following any formalities but also duped hundreds of educated unemployed youth by deploying them as casual labourers in the Department in the name of giving them employment. Sources revealed that hundreds of building permissions were provided in Gulmarg and Pahalgam areas against monetary considerations. "The present regime is finding it difficult to clear the mess which the erstwhile regime has left. Setting up of Tourism Advisory Board is an initiative to involve local stake holders and reviving ties with tourism players across India to make a new beginning," said a source. A PDP leader while talking to Early Times said, "It seems G A Mir is fearing that his misdeeds would be exposed that's why he is opposing the moves aimed at promoting tourism sector in the state." He said, "Both NC and Congress leaders looted the state exchequer when they were in power and their bunglings are coming to fore with each passing day. Our government has re-established the State Accountability Commission (SAC) and the politicians, who misused their official position would be dealt according to the law of land." Asked would government order a probe into irregularities commited by Mir during his tenure as the Tourism Minister, the PDP leader said, "No one would be spared." |
