Nawaz Sahrif's reply to Asiya's letter an affront to India | | | When a senior separatist in Kashmir,Asiya Andrabi, conveyed to Pakistan Prime Minister her appreciation of Islamabad's continued support to the people of Kashmir, engaged in jihad, was it necessary for Nawaz Sharif to reply her letter in which he thanked Asiya for reposing trust in Pakistan's policy on Kashmir ? If one takes into account politics of the Indian subcontinent or the growing conflict between India and Pakistan it seems that Nawaz Sharif's reply was politically and diplomatically an unwise step. One may differ with those who question the prudence of Nawaz Sharif while displaying his prefrence for remaining in touch with the Kashmiri separatists. Nawaz Sharif should have realized that responding to Asiya Andrabi's letter could annoy or enrage New Delhi which may further delay the reopening of the channels of dialogue and that too when Islamabad has been making strong pleas for the resumption of bilateral talks. Nawaz Sharif should have known it better than anybody else that during the last over one year Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, has simply ignored and sidelined the Kashmiri separatists and hence trying to keep them in good humour. Nawaz Sharif could provide yet another reason to New Delhi for delaying resumption of the process of dialogue. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has thanked Chief of Dukhtaran-e-Millat Asiya Andrabi in response to her letter lauding the role of Pakistan towards resolution of the Kashmir dispute. Radio Pakistan has published the contents of the letter signed by Sharif on September 30 this year. Thanking Andrabi for reposing trust on Pakistan's policies towards Kashmir issue, Sharif writes : "Pakistan doesn't see the Kashmir dispute as a geographical issue, but an unfinished agenda of 1947 Partition Plan." "The essence of the principles of partition is that the Muslim majority state of Kashmir should be given the right to self-determination. This right has been recognized by the entire world through the forum of United Nations. India itself has promised the world community that Kashmir would be given the right to choose its political future through the exercise of self-determination. "Backtracking from this promise, he writes, would be a betrayal of the promise done to the entire world community. "He assures that Pakistan will stick to its policy of extending diplomatic, political and moral support to Kashmiris in their struggle for the right to self-determination and freedom as promised by the UN. Taking cognizance of Asiya's letter and Nawaz Sharif's reply to her may enrage New Delhi because of the commitment Pakistan Prime Minister has made as far as Islamabad's reiteration of old commitment towards people of Kashmir is concerned. Yet again Nawaz Sharif talks about Pakistan's commitment on providing diplomatic, political and moral support to the people of Kashmir. He seems to have become silent while making no mention about the demand of a major section of people of Pakistan occupied Kahsmir who want liveration from Islamabad. Pakistan has been, since 1948, talking about moral, diplomatic and political support to people in Kashmir but it has preferred to remain mum on providing material support. This material support has been made available to people of Kashmir during the last 25 years' of Pakistan sponsored insurgency. And during these years Pakistan has made available to the youth in Kashmir guns, grenades, bombs and other weapons and explosives for triggering violence. In order to raise the level of violence Pakistan has been assisting groups of militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. And whenever Islamabad made a plea for the resumption of dialogue New Delhi would remind that channels of dialogue would be reopened once Islamabad stopped using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India.Modi has, right from the day he took over as Prime Minister, made it clear to the world that as long as Pakistan continued to support terror the doors for dialogue would not be reopened. He has made it clear that talks and terror cannot coexist.Hence Nawaz Sharif's reply to Asiya Andrabi's letter is sure to act as a provocation to New Delhi. |
