Macadamized a week ago, Kullar-Gujrat road develops cracks | I was pressurized to take up work despite chilly weather, says contractor | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Anantnag, Nov 17 : Explodintg the tall claims of the R&B Minister Altaf Bukhuri, Kullar Gujrat road in Pahlgam area has developed major cracks a week after it was macadamized under centrally sponsored scheme Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-(PMGYS). Locals informed Early Times that the 3.5 km long road connecting tribal area (Kullar Gujrat) with village Kullar has developed cracks due to use of low quality material and unfavorable weather. "We asked the authorities to wait still the weather improves but they didn't pay any heed and macadamized the road which gave way after a week," a delegation from the village said. They accused a local contractor of using low quality material. "Quality as well as quantity of the material was comprised but the reason best to know to him. He (contractor) even not fallowed the laid procedure," they alleged. Residents said that in coming months the road will develop potholes as it has started eroding on sides in absence of a proper drainage system. They said, "We couldn't understand why the authorities macadamized the road in hurry. We believe macadamizing our road at this eleventh hour was to swell the amount sanctioned for the road and as of now they have succeeded in their designs," a local Mushtaq Ahmad who led the delegation said. They said the officials of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana even didn't bother to inspect the road despite repeated requests and complaints. Locals said that structures on the road weren't also demolished by the concerned department. "It is 27 feet wide sanctioned road but at many places they have only macadamized half of it," they said. Locals said that during the execution of the work, they protested against use of poor quality construction materials but the contractor with the help of political higher-ups managed to crush our voices. Contractor, Farooq Ahmad Padder when contacted confirmed that the road has developed cracks. "We macadamized the road from 28th October to 2 November. We were pressurized to take up the work despite cold weather conditions," he said. He claimed that department (PMGSY) has accepted to take responsibility. "Officers on a written affidavit accepted that they take the responsibility of any problem arises so PMGSY is to be blamed which forced us to go far macadamization during rainfall," he added. Many senior officers in PMGSY and R&B Minister Altaf Bukhari didn't answer repeated calls from Early Times. |
