Rumors suggesting death of kids due to pulse polio vaccine creates panic in Anantnag | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report
Anantnag, Jan 17: Panic and fear gripped in this southern district after rumors suggesting death of kids due to pulse polio vaccine in the district spread through social networking sites. Reports said that rumors started doing rounds in the district from2:00pm but the health officials couldn't make any effort to downplay the rumor. They said that after 3: 00 pm people along with their kids in large numbers were spotted rushing towards nearby health centers and hospital after some miscreants asked people to visit the hospitals for check-up. Thousands of angry people including women with kids thronged to Maternity and Child Care hospital, District Hospital Anantnag. They raised slogans against the health department and sought explanation from them. Fearing trouble, reports said that authorities locked both the hospitals to avoid any law and order situation. Rumour mongering also resulted chaos and traffic jam in Anantnag town. Health department later awaked from its deep slumber and use loudspeakers and Masjids to deny the rumours. Chief Medical Officer Anantnag and other officers of the health department use almost all the means to stop people from visiting health institutions but couldn't get the success. Reports suggested that late in evening, those who visited hospitals got stuck in the town due to unavailability of vehicular traffic. Meanwhile, Director Health services Kashmir assured fair investigation and action against the rumour mongers. "Those who spread the rumour will be punished," he said, adding he has asked respective CMO's to file written complaints with police. |
