Anantnag, Jan 17: In order to calm down angry crowd, a health official in this southern district administered pulse polio vaccine twice to his own child.
Layeek Ahmad, field officer posted at Maternity and Child Care hospital at Sherbagh Anantnag administered vaccine to his son in front of the crowd to dispel the rumours suggesting death of kids due to pulse polio vaccine.
Ahmad, a resident of Bijbehara told Early Times that despite exercising almost all efforts to dispel the rumours, people in large numbers visited hospitals for check-ups.
"We tried everything to dispel the rumours but despite that people thronged the hospitals including Maternity and Child Care hospital. For sometime it seemed to us that our efforts weren't yielding results," Layeek said.
He said that for half an hour he kept asking people not to panic but no one listened to him.
Ahmad said that the idea of administering vaccine second time to his son stroked his mind when one angry parent termed us inhuman. "The moment I heard his cries and queries I ringed my family and asked them to bring my son to the hospital," he added.
He said that in front of the crowd he administered vaccine drops to his 3 year old son after which crowd dispersed off peacefully.
Director Health Services Kashmir, Chief Medical Officer and other officials of the health department praised the officer for such a sincere effort. |
