'Road Safety week a 'tamasha' aimed at appeasing top bosses' | | | Mohammad Irfan Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 17: People have accused the transport department and traffic police of turning recently concluded Road Safety week in Jammu as "Tamasha" aimed at appeasing the ministers and bureaucrats. The transport department and traffic police organized the 27th road safety week from January 10th to 16th this year. Many ex-ministers and bureaucrats were invited as guests just to appease them. "The main motto of organizing this traffic week didn't serve any purpose as commuters were not made aware about the traffic norms. We see many youngsters driving the vehicles at a very fast speed. Even the matadors plying in the Jammu city have no permanent drivers and even in some instances conductors are also given the permission by the so called drivers to drive these matadors who are not well versed with driving skills. Such tactics put the lives of the passengers at stake," said a local. People alleged that authorities didn't make any effort to educate the drivers about the road safety during the week. "Many drivers violate norms due to lackadaisical attitude of the traffic authorities. These drivers violate the norms with impunity as they overload the matadors under the very nose of the traffic cops. They are rarely penalized for taking commuters for a ride. There is unholy nexus between the matadors union and traffic policemen. They (traffic cops) take money to allow overloading," alleged Ramesh Kumar. Stake holders said roads in the outskirts of Jammu are in dilapidated condition and commuters face immense hardships. Dilapidated condition of roads is the main reason for the spurt in accidents. Sources said during the recently concluded Road safety week authorities penalized the defaulters but after a few days situation would be back to square one. Despite repeated attempts no senior official was available for comments.
