Freezing temperature prevails in many parts | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 17: Night chill could further intensify in the Kashmir valley, where icy cold winds during the day also continued though sun was out presenting a summer like situation. Weather will remain dry and cold which could result in drop in the minimum temperature though the maximum temperature will be above normal though icy cold winds will also continued, a MeT department spokesman said here this afternoon. Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region continued to freeze at below minus 14 degree celsius, he said. He said weather would remain dry during the next 48 hours which could follow isolated rain for two days from January 20 in the valley while dry weather is predicted in Jammu and Ladakh region till January 23. Though the mercury during the night remained below freezing point but it recorded some improvement in the valley. After yet another chilly night, people woke up to a sunny morning though icy cold winds also continued in the summer capital, Srinagar, where security forces and state police personnel were conducting random searches of vehicles and frisking passengers. Against yesterday's minus 4 degree minimum temperature, it was minus 3.2 degrees, more than a notch below normal in the city. He said the sky would be mainly clear with haze and the maximum and minimum would be around 11 degrees and minus 4 degrees respectively in the city during the next 24 hours. Pahalgam, which serves as base camp for annual Amarnath pilgrimage in south Kashmir Himalyas in summer, was coldest in the valley though the mercury was above normal. The minimum temperature was minus 5.7 degrees, more than a notch above normal there, where a large number of tourists are visiting daily. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg also witnessed about one degree improvement in the minimum temperature. Against yesterday minus 6 degrees it was minus 5 degrees, two notches below normal. It was minus 3.4 degrees minimum temperature at Qazigund, minus 3.8 degrees at Kupwara and minus 1.7 degrees at Kokernag, a tourist resort in south Kashmir. There was no change at Leh where the minimum temperature was minus 14.4 degrees while at border town of Kargil it was minus 14 degrees against yesterdays minus 13.8 degrees.
