Police resort to lathicharge on teachers | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 30: At least dozen teachers were injured while scores others detained after the police scuttled Teachers Forum proposed protest march from Sheri Kashmir Park to Directorate Office on Saturday against government's decision to re-examine their aptitude. Chanting slogans against Director Education, Shah Faisal, the marchers when reached near Regal Chowk contingents of police deployed in advance swung into action, fired dozens of tear smoke canisters, flash bang grenades and also showered color water to disperse the protesters. The agitated teachers were demanding immediate rollback of the alleged tyrannical decision and pressed the government to adopt other measures to check the ability of teachers. The police action resulted into the injuries of around a dozen teachers while scores others including JCC senior Leader and Chairman of his faction EJAC-Q, Abdul Qayoom who lead the protest were bundled into already awaiting police vehicles and detained at Kothibagh police station. The sudden action of the police lead to total chaos and confusion in the vicinity with people including shopkeepers ran helter-skelter towards safer places. Traffic movement on trendy Residency Road and Maulana Azad road also hampered for over fifteen minutes. |
