'Leaving alliance midway can be suicidal' | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 1: Governor NN Vohra's summon to the chiefs of PDP and the BJP to come clear on their stand by February 2 eveningover much-awaited Government Formation is likely to bring two parties closer again. Highly placed sources said both the parties are likely to request the executive head not to dissolve the Assembly as they would start dialogue afreshin a bid to end the stalemate. The National Conference had demanded that the Assembly be dissolved to pave way for fresh elections. Observers say if the PDP failed to meet the expectations of people of Kashmir, BJP outrightly failed in Jammu. "People of Jammu have taken the BJP regime as one of the worst times when Jammu was totally ignored whereas a major resentment among the people remained the imposition of controversial tax on the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, which this party miserably failed to get revoked," said a political analyst from Jammu, adding that underdevelopment of the Jammu region is another cause of concern. "If BJP loses chance to stay in power, this party will not even win a single seat in case of fresh elections are held, given their present poor performance, a big zero on the poor progress card," said the analyst. Sources said BJP leaders have realized this ground reality and discussed the same at the party meeting held in Jammu today. Though initially some leaders wanted to snap ties with "reluctant ally PDP", such voices deflated following intervention of the BJP top brass from New Delhi. Some of the leaders from Jammu immediately rushed to New Delhi to be told that "alliance with PDP was of strategic importance". Sources said the party leadership in the national capital doesn't want to lose the chance to rule Jammu and Kashmir that too when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a historic Rs 80,000 crore package for the state. "It was unanimously resolved that given the sentiment of the people of Jammu and the huge economic package at stake, it would be suicidal to leave any chance of alliance with the PDP, so better ask the Governor to give us some more time," the BJP sources said, adding "second innings will definitely give a chance to prove the critics wrong." The BJP had called the meeting to review the situation that arose after PDP president Mehbooba Mufti hardened her stand. Former Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and other senior leaders attended the meeting. Pertinently after a five-hour long meeting on January 31 PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said she would continue with the coalition only if the BJP high command gave an assurance about implementing the Agenda of the Alliance in letter and spirit. As both the coalition partners toughened their stand, Governor NN Vohra has asked them to respond by Tuesday evening when both the parties will show their cards. |
