All eyes on Mehbooba-Vohra meet | PDP wants implementation of 'Agenda of Alliance' | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 1: All eyes are set on Tuesday's meeting between PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and Governor N N Vohra over government formation in the state. The PDP could not arrive on a consensus on the second consecutive day on Monday and now Mehbooba would place the party's position before Governor N N Vohra. Mehbooba had convened her party legislators meeting on Monday during which, as per sources, the MLAs gave mixed opinion regarding their alliance with the BJP. "Most of the MLAs want the party president to form the government with the BJP," a source privy to the meeting said. "But the lawmakers said the 'Agenda of Alliance' should be implemented in letter and spirit. They highlighted various issues that need urgent implementation." Sources said during Monday's meeting, it was decided that BJP should re-confirm the terms of alliance which were agreed upon during Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's reign and released a time-bound action plan to address the financial, political and economic concerns of the state. Credible sources in the PDP said that during the meeting Mehbooba turned emotional and regretted that promises made with Mufti Sahib were not fulfilled. She added that due respect was not given to her father. Mehbooba Mufti, sources revealed, did not mention whether she was going to form government with BJP or not but she was very critical of the behaviour of BJP leadership, which was more or less a betrayal. A legislator present in meeting, who wished not be quoted, revealed that speech of Mehbooba Mufti was a reflection that as of now she was not convinced to form government with BJP without written assurances. She was very critical of the arrogant attitude which was adopted by the BJP leadership while dealing with a mature politician and statesman like Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The legislators reiterated their stand that Mehbooba has the complete authority to take the final call on the government formation. Senior PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said Mehbooba will meet Governor on Tuesday to convey the party stand over government formation. "She has been authorized to take a call on the government formation. She will put the party's stand before the Governor," Akhtar said. Governor N N Vohra on Sunday wrote to both the PDP and BJP to clear the air on government formation in the state. Vohra asked them to reply by Tuesday, February 2. The political stalemate in J&K follows the demise of CM Mufti Muhammad Sayeed on January 7. J&K has been without an elected government since then and Governor's rule stands imposed in the state. "Party will take a call on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir as and when it is confident that the vision and mission of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit," the PDP president has said. Sources said Mehbooba Mufti on Monday reiterated that she "will not sacrifice the interests of the state for power". Sources said that PDP is waiting for the "action" from BJP side, as BJP leads Union government from New Delhi, on 'Agenda of Alliance'. Meanwhile, the state BJP leaders Jugal Kishore, Nirmal Singh and state chief Satpal Sharma Monday rushed to New Delhi to meet party president Amit Shah to discuss the party high command's stance on PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti's demands. The PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, according to the sources, would meet Governor at 4 pm on Tuesday and after her meeting, a BJP delegation would meet the Governor at 6.30 pm. Mehbooba Mufti, who will reach Jammu on Tuesday afternoon, will straightway head to the Raj Bhawan to clarify party's position on government formation. Credible sources said that PDP president is unlikely to rule out government formation during her meeting with Governor but she is likely to put ball in BJP's court. Meanwhile credible sources in the BJP said that party delegation led by Sat Pal Sharma, state president will Governor at 6.30 because party leaders would reach Jammu from Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. Sharma along with former Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh and Member Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma have already air-dashed to New Delhi to seek directions from high-command before clarifying party's position to the Governor. Credible sources said that BJP delegation would repeat its earlier stand on government formation in which party had stated that decision to form government would be taken only after official communication from its former coalition partner PDP. However, seeking to put an end to uncertainty, Governor N.N. Vohra has asked PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and state BJP chief Sat Pal Sharma to clarify their stand on government formation on Tuesday. |
