NC 'ready' to align with BJP for power | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 6: The father son duo of Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah are issuing statements that they are not interested in forming a government in the state, but in real sense both the senior as well as junior Abdullah would not lose any opportunity of forming the government in the state. Around three weeks back, Dr. Farooq Abdullah who is the President of National Conference spilled the beans that the party would think of forming the government in the state if Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) approached them in this regard. He had said that BJP should approach them first then only they can think of forming the government with them. On the very next day Dr. Farooq's son and Working President of the party Omar Abdullah virtually reprimanded his father for his statement on government formation with BJP. Omar said that NC would not form the government and instead they would go to the people with full throttle as and when the elections are held. Omar, a former chief minister may have come to the 'rescue' of his father by saying that his party would not form the government in the state, but he in his heart of hearts would not like to miss the opportunity of being in power once again in the state. The only difference between the two is that while as senior Abdullah spoke his heart out, the junior one is keeping the cards close to his chest. People very vividly remember that Omar was a junior minister in the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre between 1999 and 2004. Omar served as Minister of State for External Affairs and also as Minister of State for Industries & Commerce in the government led by BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee. There is an old saying that 'politics makes strange bed fellows' and as such one can expect anything when it comes to power on the political horizon. NC and BJP are no strangers when it comes to enjoying the power jointly since the former was part of the Vajpayee led central government. As such one should not be surprised if the two parties join hands once again and share the power in the state. It is said that 'in politics there are no permanent friends and foes'. NC and BJP have been friends in the past and there is no record of enmity between the two parties. There is a general observation among the common masses of the state that for power the National Conference can go to any extent. In other words very few people would be surprised if NC forms the next government in the state with BJP being its coalition partner. With Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) toughening its stand with respect to government formation in the state, the BJP is looking for prospective partners to form the next government. The party would obviously look towards the NC in this regard since they cannot align with Congress since it is their old enemy. |
