Forester suspended for 'wrong' unloading of timber in Rafiabad | | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Feb 7: A Forester of Rafiabad forest range has been suspended by the department for wrongly unloading timber at Watergam forest depot. Meanwhile, the locals alleged that the forest loot is going on allegedly in connivance with timber 'mafia' in North Kashmir. Sources said that a forester of Rafiabad forest range has been suspended by the department for wrongly unloading timber at Watergam forest depot. Ather Parvaiz, forester of Chatoosa forest block had wrongly unloaded 242 sq ft timber at Watergam forest depot instead of Batapora forest depot, said sources. Sources quoting DFO Langate Mehraj ud Din Malik said, "The department has initiated investigation into the matter to unfold the story, whether it was a case of vehicle failure or smuggling attempt." Earlier, a police party led by SDPO Rafiabad Shabir Khan and SHO Dangiwacha raided the depot at Watergam and seized 234cft of timber which was illegally dumped at the depot. Sources said that, the department has started the investigation as how the wood meant for one depot is smuggled to another depot. However, the police officials from Watergam said that the same is not possible without the involvement of the forest official. The police officials said that all the persons involved in the smuggling would be booked. Meanwhile, the forester has been suspended by the Forest department after preliminary enquiry. "The green gold is being supplied in broad day light and it is all because of some corrupt officials. If authorities take strict action there will be no smuggling forest in these areas," said sources. They further said that the forest officials are fully aware about the chopping of trees adding that they have turned a blind eye towards the issue. "The smuggled timber is also provided to some influential people for various purposes. There is no check from the concerned authorities over this illegal trade of forest loot which is being unloaded during the night hours," said sources. |
