'Join other party if you are desperate for power' | Mehbooba silences voices within PDP | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 7: Reacting sharply to advices from former Ministers about Government formation, the PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti told them they were free to join other parties if they were "so desperate for power." Sources said for the past around a fortnight some of the PDP leaders had been insisting that Mehbooba should continue the alliance with the Bharatiya Janta Party. But finally Mehbooba's reply has silenced them, they said. Mehbooba tactfully told such voices that they were free to join other parties if coming to power was their ultimate motive. "You can join any party but let all be aware that my sole motive is that the party is strengthened at the grassroots and the people of Jammu and Kashmir get benefitted. Unless CBM's are not accepted by them (BJP) there can be no alliance," sources privy to the meeting quoted Mehbooba as having said. They said apart from others, the meeting was attended by Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, Nizam Ud Din Bhat, Altaf Bukhari, Haseeb Drabu, Naeem Akhter, AR Veeri, Rafi Mir and Asiya Naqash. "Nobody has stopped anybody. If you are ambitious to be in power, the exit doors are open," the insiders quoted Mehbooba as having said. On this some of the party leaders blushed and tactfully reiterated that they have authorized her to decide on the fate of new Government. "We have given the mandate to you, only you can decide it," the sources quoted the party leaders as having said. The sources said at least two of the Ministers from the previous Cabinet led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had been after the party leadership that there should be no more delay over continuation of alliance with the BJP. Sources said it was one of these leaders who on the day of Mufti's demise deliberately leaked false news to some media houses that Mehbooba would take oath within hours of Mufti's burial. The media had subsequently flashed the headlines that oath taking ceremony would take place on the same evening. "But all such reports proved wrong only because Mehbooba had no such plans. It was only a bunch of power hungry Ministers from our party who didn't want to miss even a day without power," the sources said. As of now, following a clear cut ‘no’ from the party president, such leaders have not only gone silent but want to pretend that they were never after power. "I had been a worker of PDP but Mufti Sayeed wanted me to be Minister otherwise I had no such desires. In future I want to act like worker again than be a Minister," this leader told his colleagues. The PDP maintains that there has been no breakthrough on Government formation and the party has not yet decided whether to continue the alliance with its ally BJP or snap the ties with the rightwing party. PDP's general secretary Nizam-ud-din Bhat on Saturday evening said so far no decision has been taken over the present deadlock. "Once the decision is taken by the party president Mehbooba Mufti, it will be known to all. So far there has been no breakthrough," he said. Bhat, who is one of the PDP's founding members, said the party leaders and legislators have authorized Mehbooba to take final call over whether to continue the alliance with BJP or break it. |
