Anti-Jammu forces in Kashmir ask PDP to ignore Jammu | Dangerous suggestion | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 7: Anti-Jammu forces in the over-developed, over-pampered and highly prosperous Kashmir have been exploiting the death of former J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to the hilt and advising his daughter and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to recognize and appreciate only the aspirations of her own Kashmir constituency and ignore Jammu, as there is no problem in Jammu province. "The general masses do know that mainstream politics is driven by many compulsions hidden from the common eye. However, PDP, as a party must understand that it is more committed to the people of Kashmir than any other region (Jammu or Ladakh) and they cannot afford to ignore the aspirations of the (Kashmiri) people who voted them to the present dispensation. Kashmir has more problems than Jammu, and has no sympathizers in New Delhi," they are telling the PDP president. In fact, they are telling the PDP president that her father's bridge the divide between Jammu province and Kashmir line was flawed and that if she wanted to enhance her support-base in the Valley, she has no other option but to ignore Jammu and Ladakh and focus only on Kashmir and aspirations of Kashmiri people. It is a dangerous and despicable suggestion. Kashmir doesn't constitute the entire State of J&K. Nor does it represent the general will of the people of the State. Kashmir is the smallest region of the State and it doesn't constitute even 12 per cent of the State's land area. As for its population, it is almost equal to that of Jammu, if not less. Besides, Jammu province contributes more revenue to the State exchequer. The suggestion of the anti-Jammu forces in Kashmir that the PDP must focus only on Kashmir and ignore the interests and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Ladakh to consolidate its constituency in the Valley and further expand it must be rejected with the contempt it deserves. There would be a massive revolt in Jammu and Ladakh if any attempt by any party in the State is made to disregard the sensitivities of the people of Jammu and Ladakh. Mehbooba Mufti is aware of the ground realities in the State and that's the reason she on February 5 in Jammu itself emphasized the need to bridge the regional divide in the State. However, to say so is not to suggest that all in the PDP subscribe to this view. Indeed, there are elements in the PDP who wish their party president to ignore Jammu and Ladakh and give a preferential and differential treatment to Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti or for that matter all political leaders in the State, must reject those who talk against Jammu and Ladakh. It is a must considering the fact that neither the NC nor the PDP has been able to create a strong support-base in any of these two regions despite their frequent forays into them. |
