Filth welcomes visitors to Mendhar town | | | MS Nazki
Early Times Report
Mendhar, Feb 7: In this tehsil of Poonch district, it is the filth and repulsive smell that welcome visitors to the main Mendhar town which, it would not be wrong to say, has turned into a dirty and unhygienic place. The bus stand, which is situated in the heart of the town, is littered with garbage, filth and used items. Trash is scattered at every site elsewhere. Sources said only 13 safai karamcharis were demployed for the upkeep of the area despite the fact that a contract of Rs 6 lakh per annum was being provided by Rural Development Department for the maintenance of the area through bidding system but there seemed to be no development on ground as a result of which heaps of garbage and filth remain there in every nook and corner, the sources added. The shopkeepers and the locals have urged the concerned authorities to shun their lackadaisical approach and make the area clean as people have been suffering a lot for no fault of theirs. When contacted, Panchayat Secretary, Mendhar town, Sourab Ahmed Khan said that there was a big hygienic problem in Mendhar town and Rural Development Department had failed to look after the area. He expressed his unhappiness over the non-functioning of four bathrooms at Bus Stand area since long. Even as Rs 20 to Rs 30 were being charged from vehicle operators against Adda Parchi, this money was not being utilised to employee more safai karamcharis to keep the area clean. People of the tehsil have urged Governor N N Vohra to direct the concerned department to take the cognizance of matter, sources said. |
