Jammu, Feb 8 : The Division of Fruit Science, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, SKUAST-J organized one day training cum awareness programme today at Nai Basti, Akhnoor, Jammu under Mission for Integrated Development in Horticulture (MIDH) project on "Training and demonstration of rejuvenation technology on old and unproductive orchards in Jammu province". Dr. Parshant Bakshi, Principal Investigator of the project highlighted the importance rejuvenation of old/unproductive aonla orchards so that a commercial and quality produce could be harvested. Decline in productivity of orchard could largely be due to poor photosynthetic efficiency besides several other factors including age of the orchard, dense and intermingling branches, neglected and poor management of orchard. The participants (HDO's, farmers and orchardists) were educated about various methods of rejuvenation of old/unproductive trees that are no longer in bearing or bear very little. He deliberated on the importance of imparting vigour to the plant so that the plant can bear to its maximum and the farmer in return gets a good value per unit of land. The farmers/orchardists were apprised about the success story of rejuvenation by Division of Fruit Science in the mango orchards of Jammu and the same work will be taken up in aonla under this project. Dr. Bakshi also responded to the queries of the orchardists/farmers and the farmers/orchardists found the training programme relevant to their needs. He demonstrated pasting of copper oxychloride to heal the wounds and save the tree from infections Farmers were also guided how to select secondary scaffolds/branches for further growth so that a tree has an open structure. |
