Centre, JK Govt discuss law & order, rehabilitation of Pandits

New Delhi, Apr 13: Amidst tension in parts of Kashmir, the Centre today reviewed the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir besides plans for early rehabilitation of displaced Pandits.
Senior officials of the Home Ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir government were closeted for an hour and discussed the prevailing security situation in the state and how to improve it further.
Today's discussion came a day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and discussed various issues, including law and order situation in the state.
The meeting came amidst the curfew-like restrictions imposed in parts of Srinagar and Kupwara districts in J&K as tension mounted over the killing of three persons in firing by security forces to quell protests after an alleged molestation incident.
Besides tension continued at the NIT, Srinagar that erupted on March 31 after India lost to West Indies in semi-final of the T-20 World Cup cricket tournament prompting some local students to rejoice and burst fire crackers.
The incident led to protests by outstation students, resulting in clashes between the two groups. The situation has since been volatile there. Issues related to Kashmiri migrants and their rehabilitation was discussed threadbare by the officials of the state and central governments, official sources said. Officials of the state government, including Principal Secretary (Home) R K Goyal, sought the Centre's cooperation for modernisation of police forces, especially for setting up women police stations, sources said.
Home Ministry's Special Secretary (Internal Security) M K Singla, Joint Secretary (Kashmir) Rajit Punhani also attended the meeting.
