Kashmir valley on boil following killing of 4 civilians in Kupwara district | Normal life paralyzed due to strike call given by separatists | | Jehangir Rashid/ S Tahir ul Haq Early Times Report srinagar/baramulla, Apr 13: Normal life got paralyzed across Kashmir valley today following a strike call given by separatist leaders against the killing of two youth at the hands of security forces at Handwara in North Kashmir's Kupwara district on Tuesday. Reports said that the strike was complete in almost all the major cities, towns and townships of the Kashmir valley. Protest demonstrations were reported from some of the areas of Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir valley. Police and security forces personnel used force to disperse the protesters in different parts of the valley. Meanwhile, the toll in the firing incident reached three as a woman who was injured in the firing incident succumbed to her injuries early today. One more youth was killed after being hit by a teargas shell in the Drugmulla area of Kupwara district. The entire Kupwara town was on boil today following the killing of four civilians. Trouble broke out in the Handwara town on Tuesday after allegations that some of the security forces personnel tried to molest a girl who had gone to a washroom falling opposite to an army bunker. The girl raised hue and cry following which youth took to the streets and carried out strong protest demonstration against the incident. The security forces personnel opened fire on the protesters leading to death of two youth namely Naeem Qadir Bhat and Mohammad Iqbal Bhat. More than one dozen persons sustained injuries in the firing incident. Out of the injured persons a woman identified as Raja Begum succumbed to her injuries at SKIMS-Soura. Following the killing of two youth yesterday groups of agitating youth came out in protest at Handwara, Kupwara, Langate, Drugmulla and many other areas in the frontier district of Kupwara. At Drugmulla a youth identified as Jahangir Ahmad Wani sustained serious injuries after being hit by a teargas shell. Jahangir later on succumbed to his injuries and this led to further protests in the different areas of Kupwara district. At the same time the normal life got disrupted in most of the areas of Kashmir valley including Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Most of the shops and commercial establishments remained closed in almost all the districts and towns of the Kashmir valley. The public transport was also off the roads with only the private vehicles could be seen operating on the roads. The administration imposed curfew like restrictions in the Handwara town and some of the areas in Srinagar district. At the same time, the army today officially released a video of a girl who says that she was not molested by army personnel as was being alleged by the protesters at Handwara. It has also been learnt that an ASI of Jammu & Kashmir Police has been suspended following the firing at Handwara. The authorities late in the evening suspended internet services in the North Kashmir. General Officer Commanding in Chief (GOC in C) Northern Command, Lt Gen D S Hooda along with GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Satish K Dua visited Handwara and carried out interaction with the police and security officials. Minister for Rural Development Department, Abdul Haq Khan and Minister for Social Welfare, Sajjad Lone visited Handwara and took stock of the situation. Meanwhile, reports said that four journalists associated with local media were stopped and beaten up while they were discharging their professional duties. The journalists who were stopped and beaten up were Asim Shah (Kashmir Reader), Adnan Ahmad (CNS), Waseem Ahmad (Udaan) and Abu Baker (Kashmir Scenario). In the meantime, police said that groups of agitating youth carried out protest demonstrations in the different parts of Kashmir valley. "The burial of three civilians, who died in yesterday's incidents at Handwara, concluded at Kupwara, Langate and Handwara today. After burial, miscreants attacked Police Post Magam (P/S Handwara) and caused extensive damage to the building. Similarly, police post Langate was also attacked by a mob of over 2000 causing extensive damage to the building and burning down of a shed within the premises of this police post," said a police spokesman. The police spokesman said that miscreants also resorted to heavy stone pelting in Handwara town during the day. During law and order problem at Drugmula Kupwara, one Jahangir Ahmad Wani S/O Ghulam-ud-Din Wani R/O Nagri, Kupwara, received head injury and later succumbed in the hospital. He was buried in his ancestral graveyard later in the evening. "Police exercised utmost restraint despite heavy provocations. During the process of dispersal of unruly mobs, about 110 Police personnel got injured. Cases have been registered regarding death of civilians in law & order incidents and investigation started," said the police spokesman. The police spokesman said that in Srinagar also, some parts of down town city witnessed stone pelting in which two CRPF jawans namely Head Constable Rajesh Verma of 54 Bn CRPF and Constable Mukesh Mishra of 49th Bn CRPF got injured seriously and were admitted in SMHS Hospital Srinagar for treatment. One of the jawans was later referred to Bone and Joints Hospital Barzalla, Srinagar. |
