Garbage chokes water bodies, people seek revival | | | Arun Kumar

Kathua, Apr 13: Union government and Apex Court instructed to protect water bodies in entire country including district Kathua but number of water bodies meant for irrigation and domestic purposes have been choked by dumping garbage turned dry and soft place for garbage. People hailing from Chann Arorian today raised their voice under the leadership of social worker Deepak Raina wherein they demanded preservation of a river that now epitomized in small canal. While addressing people, Raina said the river, constructed by Maharaj Hari Singh with the aim to provide water for irrigation and different domestic purposes, now has turned into small canal, soft place for garbage, drainage and encroached, all due to allegedly ignorance of Raavi Tawi officials rendering services in Raavi Tawi department branch Hiranagar. Raina said shortage of dustbins and lack of proper drainage resulting garbage in the canal. He demanded proper cleanliness of the canal and action against encroachment. Surinder Kumar, a local, appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to intervene in the matter and verify the tender that occurred few days back for cleanliness of the canal but nothing has been done at ground level. He alleged on contractor and concerned officials to squander funds meant for cleanliness of silt from canal. When contacted Naresh Sharma, XEn Raavi Tawi, Hiranagar, he has informed that 35 tenders have been advertised for cleanliness of slit from all canals falling under his jurisdiction. He said instructions have been passed on field staff disposal of slit in unused land, action against encroachment and warning to people who use the canal for drainage. He said notices have been issued to encroachers for eviction of land to preserve water bodies. |
