DB seeks details about poor girls provided benefits under SMAS, Hunnar | | | Srinagar, Apr 13: A division Bench of the state high court has directed social welfare department to provide details about the poor girls who have been provided benefits of State Marriage Assistance Scheme (SMAS) and Huunar scheme in the state. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, the division bench comprising Justice M H Attar and Justice J R Kotwal again made clear that while providing assistance to the identified poor girls, the social officers shall not insist on production of invitation card but as directed by the court earlier as substitute to 'documentary evidence', they can be asked to file an affidavit duly sworn before any Judicial Magistrate. The court posted the PIL for further consideration from week commencing May 2. District social welfare officers of Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam were present before the court. Under SMAS, an eligible girl beneficiary will be entitled to get one time financial assistance of Rs. 25000 and five grams of gold while Hunnar is a skill development programme for the girls living below poverty line. The division bench also said that the issue about the amendments to be made in the corruption laws could not he considered today because of non availability of Advocate General and announced to take up the same next week. The Court passed the directions in a PIL titled Muhammad Amin Beigh v/s State and others. The District Magistrate Srinagar had slapped detention order under Public Safety Act (PSA) on Beigh for allegedly exploiting girls under the garb of providing them jobs. Beigh had challenged the order in the High Court. However, the Court dismissed his plea and subsequently passed series of directions to the government asking it to take steps to ensure rehabilitation of poor girls in the State. |
